Dealing with persistant damp in a basement wall can often be a problem in Bristol's Victorian housing stock. Victorian properties are notorious for minimal foundation depth, zero damp proof course and the floor laid directly onto compacted dirt. This is the second time we have used this technique successfully (the SOF technique?!). The principal is to allow the wall to breathe and for damp to rise and fall within the confines of the drylining system. This case involved rebuilding part of the rotten door frame as well.

Some detail from the Southville bathroom used in the cover photo. The window wall was insulated with 35mm Celotex board and the window frame built out to accommodate. Along with smart ventilation, this eliminated condensation forming on the exterior wall. Underfloor heating, a wet room style shower and custom wainscoting in a glorious blue complete this unique room.

Recently completed compact utility room and adjacent cloakroom and a whopping 13+ metres of continuous flooring running all the way from the dining room to the utility (with a drop of 40mm over the length that needed levelling first). Nearly all the "off the shelf" units had to be customised. Nicely finished off with grey marble worktops in the utility and matching detail in the cloakroom.

Closing off a basement door with 50mm insulated plasterboard and double glazing the window above the door, have added more warmth to this basement hallway. Built in storage for 2 sewing machines under a bench seat adds some practical storage (with left over materials from "the art centre")

Finished earlier this year, "the art centre" was designed to make the basement hallway in Charlotte & Tom's house a useable space once more. The dropleaf design means the hallway is not obstructed when the centre is not in use, whilst the cut out design in the dropleaf, ensures that access to the cloakroom is still possible when it is!
