Three months ago, I joined Beyond the Bark Ltd as Business Support Administrator, and this week we took the opportunity to step back, reflect on the journey so far, and look at where the business is heading next.

We spent the afternoon at the beautiful for my three-month probation review. It was a great opportunity to discuss what has gone well, where improvements can be made, and how my role is developing as the company continues to grow.

Alongside the day-to-day administration, training course support, accounts and customer enquiries, I will now be taking a more active role in developing our online presence, helping to showcase the work we do and the people behind the business.

It has been a busy and rewarding first three months, and I am looking forward to supporting the next stage of Beyond the Bark's growth.

A huge thank you to Phil for the support, patience and opportunities so far. Exciting times ahead.

An interesting day at the Institute of Chartered Foresters Conference at the

Great to hear Terry Crick speak on innovation in arboriculture and the appropriate use of Internal Tree Inspection equipment. The talk reinforced the importance of understanding both the capabilities and limitations of inspection tools, ensuring that equipment is used to support proportionate, evidence-based tree management decisions rather than relying on outputs in isolation.

Also inspiring to listen to Callum Throw discussing photogrammetry, Gaussian splats and the move from traditional 2D outputs towards more immersive 3D visualisation within arboriculture.

As always, it was great to spend time with the team at and discuss ongoing developments within the sector. One particularly interesting conversation focused on combining Trichoderma soil improvement strategies with TreeMotion sensors to potentially quantify physiological response and monitor changes over time using measurable data.

We have expanded and rebranded, Professor Shearbomb Ltd is now Beyond the Bark Ltd.

Our focus remains on helping clients make clear, evidence-based decisions about important trees, like this majestic London plane, through structured inspections of their internal condition.

We are also delighted to have Catrin on board as our Business Support Administrator. After six years as office manager at a local tree surgery company, she has joined us at an exciting time and is helping the consultancy move forward as the administrative demands increase with the courses back in full swing.

We were asked by West Country Tree Services to carry out an Internal Tree Inspection on a European beech tree in Corsham due to a large cavity at the base of the trunk. There were concerns regarding the risks posed considering it's location. In order to validate the tomogram and interpret the results as accurately as possible the IML Resi-PD400 Microdrill was used to measure the resistance of the wood. Due to the risk rating being ACCEPTABLE there are no remedial tree works recommended at present. Another tree saved!! 🌳

Wiltshire Council asked us to take a look at this Holm oak (Quercus Ilex) in Malmesbury, where we found a fungal fruiting body of Ganoderma lucidum, a known wood decay fungus. The tomogram shows a large central area of low velocity (blue and white), indicating significant internal decay. The surrounding purple and green areas represent incipient or progressive decay. 🧐🌳

After another recommendation from Chris Hood of we went to look at this TPO'd common lime tree in Wedmore as there were concerns regarding potential structural damage to a Victorian retaining wall.

The tree was removed and replaced with three medium sized native trees. The potential liabilities were removed and the future amenity and ecosystem services provided were improved. 🌳

After a large lime tree fell during high winds, landing in a neighbouring property, a full VALID tree risk assessment was carried out on all trees at St Andrew’s Church, Cheddar.

As a result, the removal of three sycamore trees was recommended, along with bracing work on another.

The assessment followed the Tolerability of Risk (ToR) Framework β€” a key part of the VALID methodology β€” which helps define what levels of tree risk are broadly acceptable, unacceptable, or tolerable when reduced to a level that's 'as low as reasonably possible'.

Following a routine tree safety survey, an embryonic fruiting body of the wood decay fungus Ganoderma applanatum/australe was identified on a European beech at the edge of Painswick Recreational Ground, overhanging Lower Washwell Lane and within falling distance of garages and a driveway.

On the recommendation of Phil Dye from Wotton Tree Consultancy Ltd, an internal inspection was carried out to better understand the tree’s condition.

We used the PiCUS 3 Sonic Tomograph and there is no significant decay or dysfunction within the trunk according to the tomogram produced.
