Wishing all my valued customers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I started sweeping chimneys over 15 years ago and am lucky to have built up a large number of loyal, regular customers. Thank you for your ongoing support; it is really appreciated! I consider myself very lucky to have met and got to know a little some great people through sweeping chimneys.

Hopefully see you all again next year!

Best wishes,

Jonny

After a few weeks of no blocked chimneys I had a challenging day on Thursday: three blocked chimneys! "It comes in threes!"

Took a bit of time and effort but managed to clear them eventually - see photos of what came down each chimney.

The customers hadn't had their chimneys swept in a long time and the one with the chunky soot had been burning their stove on a low temperature. They were lucky to not have had a chimney fire. I advised getting a stove thermometer to ensure burning at the optimum temperature and using some chimney cleaning powder to help break down tar and sticky soot.

The ones with the twigs didn't have a proper cowl with bird cage fitted so I advised this was done asap.

Stay safe folks - fires and chimneys can be hazardous in many ways.

Not everyone is aware that burning your stove at the wrong temperature can cause problems:

❌ Too hot can damage the stove

❌ Too cold can lead to the build up of creosote and problematic soot/tar which in turn can lead to a chimney fire. We want the soot to be a fine/powder like consistency rather than chunky.

Controlling the temperature comes from using the air vents on the stove and also ensuring the wood you burn is good quality dry, well seasoned hardwood logs.

I recommend using a stove thermometer which indicates the optimum temperature range.

Hope that helps! 👍

Another good reason for getting the flue/chimney swept regularly is to clear the build up of ash and soot that can gather on top of the baffle plate inside the stove.

This is what was cleared from one recently 👇. It had nearly blocked off the opening to the stove pipe! Luckily I got there before it became a major problem.

This is always a very nice sight once the blockage is cleared. See photo of blockage in comments. Hard work but worth it!

I wasn't a member of the scouts as a child but I have definitely learnt the importance of being prepared! 😉👍

I swept this big inglenook fireplace earlier in the week and although it took a long time to sheet up it was well worth it as plenty of soot came down which would have otherwise ended up in the customer's sitting room.

I take great care to sheet up all fireplaces that I sweep whether they be open fires or stoves, so rest assured I won't be leaving a mess once I've finished. In fact a lot of the time I leave the fireplace cleaner than it was when I arrived!

Best wishes,

Jonny

This is what came down from a chimney I swept today; up there in my 'Top 10 Most Sooty Chimneys' since 2010!

Customer said they kept forgetting to get it done which is something I often hear. Lucky they didn't have a chimney fire and I was able to clean it!

Please remember to have your chimney swept each year!
