What is a Lease Extension?
When you have a leasehold property (rather than freehold or share of freehold), you have a contract with a Landlord or Management Company that specifies how long you can live in the property and the amount of ground rent you must pay. Each year, the remaining term on the lease reduces. If the lease were to run out, full ownership of the property would revert to the freeholder.

To prevent this, leaseholders are legally entitled to extend their lease term by 90 years if they have a professional valuation carried out and negotiate a lease extension agreement with the freeholder. See the Leasehold Reform Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 for more detail.
