Thats a wrap for this academic year!😪
We start the new one next week!😁

Over the last 12 months, which, for us, we see as an academic year running from the beginning of September to the end of August the Cornwall Bicycle Project has been incredibly proud to have helped so many students and volunteers develop their skills, achieve their goals and take the next steps in their journey. 🚲

As a project that provides alternative provision, we often see people walk through our doors with low self-esteem, some of whom may never have received a certificate in their life.

Anthony, Education and Workshop Manager at our Camborne workshop, explains what these achievements can mean:
“As somebody who left school with no GCSEs, I can 100% relate to how some of these pupils and students feel when they first start at our unit. It’s often easy to feel that because you may not have succeeded in one part of life, you may not succeed in another. But ultimately, we’re here to turn that around.
What we try to do is build confidence within the students and provide a settled environment in which they can thrive. With one-to-one learning, we aim to build their confidence and help them believe that nothing is unachievable in life.”

One of the ways we recognise and celebrate those achievements is through AQA awards, nationally recognised certificates that demonstrate practical skills and knowledge.

We offer four levels of AQA in bicycle maintenance:

🔧 AQA Entry Level – Bicycle Maintenance
Covering the essential basics, including puncture repairs, bicycle cleaning, and health and safety within a workshop environment.

🔧 AQA Level 1 – Bicycle Maintenance
Building on those foundations with skills such as gear set-up, brake fault finding, and disconnecting and reconnecting a bicycle chain.

🔧 AQA Level 2 – Bicycle Maintenance
A higher standard of practical bicycle maintenance, including headset removal and replacement, bottom bracket removal and replacement, brake fault analysis, wheel truing and a range of other skilled repairs.

🔧 AQA – Brake Bleeding
Focusing specifically on brake fault analysis, brake repair and the practical skills involved in brake bleeding.
And this year, we are absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to say that 47 AQA certificates have been awarded over the last 12 months! 🎉

We think that’s a fantastic achievement, and we want to offer our biggest congratulations to every student and volunteer who has worked hard to achieve their award.

We hope these certificates will help you take your next steps, whether that’s into the bicycle trade, further training, employment, or simply building confidence and skills for the future.

We are incredibly proud of every single one of you.
And this achievement isn’t just down to the students and volunteers. We are equally proud of our fantastic tutors, staff, admin team and volunteers who give their time, knowledge and encouragement to help others succeed.

🎉 A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO TAKU & BEN! 🚲👏

We’re incredibly proud of Taku and Ben, who have both successfully completed our Power in Pedals project, funded by the National Grid, and achieved their AQA qualification in Bicycle Maintenance! 🎓🔧

Over the last four weeks, both lads have shown incredible dedication, determination and enthusiasm, and they’ve been absolutely brilliant additions to our Camborne workshop.

🚵 Taku
From the very first session, Taku told us he was travelling down from Barnstaple, a two-hour journey each way for every session! 😮 That’s some commitment. Because of the distance, we offered Taku the opportunity to complete the remainder of his course in one full day, which he successfully finished with us yesterday. His certificate will be arriving with him in the coming days.

A keen mountain biker, Taku has really thrown himself into the project and has gained some fantastic new skills that will help him maintain and look after his own bikes. 👏

📻 Ben
Ben lives a little closer to us and you may have also heard him on a local radio station in Redruth! He’s a keen rider himself and has been fantastic to have around the workshop.

It’s been brilliant watching Ben’s confidence grow over the last four weeks. He was understandably a little shy during his first week, but look at him now, he was even answering our phones today when people were calling in! 😂👏

We can genuinely see both Taku and Ben working in bike shops in the future, and we couldn’t be happier with what they’ve achieved.

Well done, lads! 🥳 You are the first two students to successfully complete this special project, and you’ve set the bar incredibly high.

A massive thank you for all your hard work, enthusiasm and positivity. We’ve loved having you both in the workshop. ❤️

We’re now looking forward to welcoming more Power in Pedals students to our St Austell branch in September. 🚲🔧

While the lads were in the workshop working hard this morning, Anthony went on a voluntary community outing to Carnon Downs repair cafe organised by Feock Parish Council.

In 90minutes, 5 bikes and a trike were looked at with some repairs needed. We really enjoyed attending and want to thank Feock Parish Council for providing a fantastic service to their local residents.

We look forward to attending another 😀

We are sorry 😞

We are sorry to those of you that needed a bicycle service at the end of August in our Camborne workshop, that we have been unable to help. We have informed customers no servicing until September, for a very good reason 👍

We are keeping Cornwall’s bikes safe, one service contract at a time.

The Cornwall Bicycle Project CIO is leading the way in providing affordable, reliable bicycle safety checks, servicing and repairs for schools, colleges, clubs and even our local council here in Cornwall.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve undertaken numerous service contracts, helping organisations keep their fleets safe, roadworthy and ready to use, all at a really reasonable cost.

This week, we welcomed our biggest contract of the year so far from DT Coaching on behalf of the fleets owners, Cornwall Council, getting their Bikeability fleet checked, repaired and ready to go from the beginning of September. Approximately 25 bikes in total!

It’s a big, big job, and it’s been all hands on deck at our Camborne workshop! 🔧

Our mechanics have already found and fixed multiple issues, including punctures, broken brakes, loose and buckled wheels, rusty chains and a whole host of smaller faults. Thankfully, the repairs are now nearly complete and the fleet is almost ready for another busy Bikeability programme.

And the best part? Most bicycles come in at just £10 each for a safety check and repair, with only small additional costs where replacement parts are needed.
Every bike completed is supplied with a report and costs.

We’re proud to be supporting organisations across Cornwall to keep people cycling safely, while making professional bicycle servicing accessible and affordable.

In just 2 weeks time, this fleet of 25 plus bicycles will be used weekly for Cornwalls children doing Bikeability it primary schools across our county.

Wow… 155 likes! ❤️

Less than 24 hours ago, we shared a post about Harry, and it has become the biggest-reaching and most-liked post we’ve ever put out! 🚲👏

Ultimately, that’s simply because of Harry and we’re incredibly grateful for all the love, support and kind comments you’ve shown him. ❤️

But there’s more…

That one post has also brought us another 65 followers, taking us to over 1,500 followers! 🎉

That’s incredible, and we really wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has joined us, shared our posts, liked, commented or simply followed along with what we do.

We also thought tonight was a good opportunity to explain a little more about what actually happens inside our workshops, because some of you may have discovered us through Harry but might not be completely sure what the Cornwall Bicycle Project is all about.

The Cornwall Bicycle Project was founded by Emma Roberts in 2020 and is the influence behind it all.

We’re a small charity with big objectives here in Cornwall, but we’re also a fully operational bicycle workshop and, most importantly, an educational learning centre.

🚲 We deliver community-led rides
🚲 Limitless Cycling
🚲 Bikeability
🚲 Free adult evening sessions where people can learn bike maintenance
🚲 Alternative education provision for young people, including those who may struggle within mainstream education
🚲 Projects supporting people who are not in education, employment or training
🚲 And much, much more

At the heart of our workshops is our education programme, and this is something we’re incredibly proud of.

We’re also currently delivering projects such as our work with National Grid, helping to engage and empower people who may otherwise find themselves excluded from education or employment.

Our workshops also rely heavily on an amazing team of volunteers, who give their time, knowledge and enthusiasm to help make everything we do possible. We genuinely couldn’t do it without them. ❤️

And yes, we are a fully operational bicycle workshop, with Cytech-qualified technicians, which means we can offer servicing and repairs to the public at affordable prices.

One of our biggest charitable objectives is simple:

Get the community cycling. 🚲

That’s why we renovate and service bicycles to a high standard and make them available to the public at affordable prices, often at a fraction of the cost of buying a new bike.

Every refurbished bicycle is double-checked by two mechanics to make sure it meets our safety and quality standards.

And the best part?

The profits from those bikes go straight back into our charitable work and help support projects such as our National Lottery-funded workshops.

It’s what keeps us rolling. ❤️

Harry!

We don't actually have a Team Member of the Week award here at Cornwall Bicycle Project… but if we did, this week it would absolutely go to Harry. ❤️

Harry who has autism, first came to us as a student, referred through the Project. He was brilliant from day one, and we were so impressed that we eventually employed him for two days a week.

But Harry's journey with us is about much more than employment. We're proud to support him in building confidence, developing his skills and succeeding in ways that perhaps once seemed out of reach.

Harry at 19 can be quite shy, but over the last 6 months, we've seen some really exciting changes. He's started speaking with customers, selling bicycles and putting his incredible mountain bike knowledge to good use. What Harry doesn't know about mountain bikes probably isn't worth knowing! 🚲 Customers reviews on Harry have been 5 star!

But this week, something happened that really stood out and we wanted to share it!

On Tuesday, we held a Time 2 Move session in Camborne. Time2Move Holiday Programme is a holiday programme that offers activities to primary and secondary pupil. Six young people were due to attend, but one pupil was extremely nervous. He sat on the stairs with his mum and didn't want to come into the workshop.

Harry turned to the other members of staff and said, "I'll take him and look after him."

And he did exactly that.

By the end of the session, that young person was absolutely buzzing and had had a brilliant time.

When Anthony gave Harry some feedback about how well he'd done based on information from the staff in the unit, his response was incredibly powerful. "I thought It would be a good idea to offer my assistance because I have been in situations like the young boy was in in the past and would have loved a gentle nudge in the right direction so thought it would break the ice for him"

And that's what makes this moment so special.

Harry wasn't just teaching someone about bikes. He recognised how that young person was feeling because he'd been there himself, and he used his own experience to make them feel comfortable, included and confident.

Harry, we are really, really proud of you. ❤️

Well done. You are living proof of what the Cornwall Bicycle Project is all about, supporting people, building confidence and helping everyone realise what they're capable of.

🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP! 🚲❤️

Our small Camborne workshop is currently down to just three very small 12-inch kids’ bikes, and we are doing everything we can to keep up with the demand from our community.

If you have a children’s bike from 12-inch up to 26-inch that you no longer need, we would be incredibly grateful for your donation. There’s no need to ring ahead or send us a photo, if it’s a kids’ bike, we’ll happily accept it at the moment!

We’re also desperately looking for rear derailleurs and front derailleurs. Any donations would make a huge difference.

Every bike donated helps us keep local people cycling by providing affordable, accessible bicycles. Any profits we make are reinvested straight back into our charity and our community. 💚

So, if you have a kids’ bike gathering dust in your shed, garage or garden, please consider donating it to us. It could make a real difference to a local family.
