Even on holiday, it's hard to fully switch off from work!

Mike spotted this rather large "radiator" on his recent travels — a Victorian cast iron Gurney's Patent stove, found inside a beautiful historic church.

It just goes to show, once you're a surveyor, you never quite stop noticing the details, wherever you are!

Anyone else catch themselves doing this on holiday? 😂

Have you had bad workmanship on your build or renovation? 🛠️

On a recent inspection, we found the builder had extended the internal plasterboard lining externally, rather than properly terminating it at the door frame. Plasterboard isn't designed for exposure to the elements — left like this, it will absorb moisture, swell, and break down over time.

This was just one of several issues found on this job. Unfortunately, this kind of shortcut happens more often than you'd think — work that looks finished on the surface but hasn't been completed to the correct standard underneath.

Looks fine from the ground... 👀 but climb up into the loft and out onto the roof, and it's a different story! On a recent survey we found cracked tiles, a moss-clogged valley gutter, and a chimney that's certainly seen better days.

This is why we always say don't judge a roof from the pavement. 🏠🔍

This client had already spent money on remedial works, including tanking and a chemical damp proof injection, but the problem kept coming back.

A thorough inspection revealed the real cause: large tears in the roof underlay were allowing wind-driven rain to enter the roof and track down the cavity wall before appearing internally.

On a recent snagging inspection, our team identified 100+ defects in this newly built property. Among them: a window fitted with a mismatched catch, poor making good around the frame, and a chip in the frame itself.
