A building site manager has won a prestigious housebuilding award for his work on a new homes development at Peters Village.

Gary Nott, 52, works for Ashberry Homes and was one of just 14 site managers in the SE of England to be awarded a Seal of Excellence as part of the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) Pride in the Job awards.

Gary received the accolade in recognition of the high standard of his work at Ashberry Homes’ Victoria Gardens development at Peters Village.

He was nominated for the prize after winning his third NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award earlier this year – an accolade bestowed upon just 450 site managers from around 11,000 across the country.

Gary said: “to win a Seal of Excellence award is an amazing feeling and a great reward for all the hard work put in by the team at Victoria Gardens. This is my first Seal of Excellence after three Quality awards, but I’m not finished yet. Next year, I want to go one step further and achieve a Regional Award.

“It has been tough to get going again after a complete lockdown. Building and completions took slightly longer than normal, but safety was a priority for all of us on-site and we’ve achieved the goals we set at the beginning. Victoria Gardens is now nearly complete and buyers have been extremely pleased with the quality of the homes we’ve built at the development.”

New Year start for Peters - Village Centre Construction

We're pleased to announce that work on creating the heart of Peters Village, including the shops and community centre, starts in January. Covid-19 has disrupted planning and building and driven up the cost of materials and logistics this year, on top of other issues not of our making – it’s been ‘a perfect storm’.

A new year can be a new start. Construction of all centre facilities will launch in January 2021, Covid permitting, beginning with the village hall, quickly followed by the supermarket and three further shops (tba) plus ancillary works such as landscaping, parking and a play area.

We're also pleased that the Co-op will operate the supermarket. It is scheduled to open by autumn next year and will be a great fit for Peters Village, as the brand is known for its ethical and Fairtrade policies.

The Co-op has also confirmed that the new store will run on 100% renewable energy, all of which chimes with the community’s sustainable transport plan, nurturing of rare wildlife and the local Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Peters Village will gain enviable facilities; the community hall, for instance, is 25% larger than originally proposed after we took note of local input, and now includes changing rooms for the playing fields next door, which we have also upgraded.

Peters Village has a lot to attract first time buyers. Through our partnership with the Government’s 'Homes England', housebuilders have been able to offer a range of affordable options, enabling people to get onto the housing ladder in a rural location with great facilities.

· Creating an in-house blueprint for housing quality and upmarket style to give a harmonious look to the whole community, rather than a mixed appearance dictated by the preferred designs of different housebuilders

· Donating the land and financing a fine new school that is larger and better ‘future-proofed’ than the planning permission required

· Building a bridge that is both elegant and effective, cutting what had been a tortuous 25-minute drive from bank to bank to just one minute

· Striving to ensure that the community is well served by public transport

· Commissioning a distinctive and appropriate sculpture to welcome people to the all-new community

· Preserving and commemorating the natural and human heritage of the site: there can be few new communities able to boast such an important SSSI.

Peters Village (PV) has received a prestigious accolade at the annual First Time Buyer (FTB) readers’ awards.

The 1,000-home community beside the River Medway, near Wouldham, was ‘Highly Commended’ in the Best New Development in the South category, which recognises sites offering 'an exceptional range of new homes that stand out from the crowd whilst remaining accessible for first time buyers.'

Richard Hall, CEO of PV developer Trenport, said afterwards: “We are delighted with this honour in one of the toughest FTB awards categories, especially as votes come from the magazine’s readers in print and online – all prospective buyers.

“The award underlines why we have had such a high rate of sale for homes at PV and no shortage of house builder partners keen to develop here – we have just one development parcel left now.

“PV has a lot to attract first time buyers. Through our partnership with the Government’s Homes England department, housebuilders have been able to offer a range of affordable options, enabling people to get onto the housing ladder in a rural location with great facilities.

“We’ve already built the elegant all-new Peters Bridge – the first private crossing of the Medway since the 1800s – to enhance communication links into London and the surrounding area, and completed a state-of-the-art school.

“The award gave us a double cause to celebrate last week, as we've also signed a deal to bring the Co-op supermarket chain to PV as part of a village centre complex that we will start building early in 2021, after a delay largely caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.

"Apart from these facilities, I’m sure voters were also influenced by the location’s landmark riverside promenade, the rare flora and fauna of its Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) plus country walks and cycleways.

“Apart from being Highly Commended in ‘Best in South’ we were also honoured that Peters Village was shortlisted for another FTB award, Best Partnership – a new award, celebrating 'a collaboration of two or more companies that have worked together to deliver both quality and affordable homes for first time buyers.'

In the case of PV we've been joined by some of the UK’s best-known house builders, including Orbit, Hyde Westerhill, Bellway, Ashberry, Moat and Bovis.

The partnership also features: Homes England, which gave loan assistance for Peters Bridge; and Kent Wildlife Trust, which manages the community’s SSSI through Trenport funding.

PV was originally shortlisted for both its category awards back in February, with excitement then due to build towards a lavish London awards ceremony in April. Covid-19 put paid to that, but we were impressed with how FTB staged the awards as a virtual ceremony on October 23 – complete with celebratory hampers delivered to the homes and offices of those ‘attending’.

TV duo Jonnie Irwin (the face of A Place in the Sun and Escape to the Country) and Nicki Chapman (best known for Escape to the Country) reunited to present the 11th FTB awards and the magazine’s Editor Lynda Clark added her thoughts:

“It has been a tough year for first time buyers, but with every challenge brings an opportunity to make a real difference.

The 2020 First Time Buyer Readers’ Awards are all about championing ways to make homeownership achievable and celebrating the companies that are going over and above the call of duty.”

The new award follows an earlier accolade for PV: the site took Bronze in the Best Public Realm category at the What House? Awards 2019.

Co-op is confirmed for Peters Village – expected to open onsite by autumn 2021



Peters Village developer Trenport has announced that the Co-op will operate the community’s new supermarket, with work expected to start by January 2021 and complete by the autumn.

The brand is known for its ethical and fair trade policies and has already confirmed that the new store will run on 100% renewable energy, all of which makes it a great fit for Peters Village, where there is a sustainable transport plan and rare wildlife at the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The store will be the focal point of the new village centre, starting on soon, which includes three more shops, a dental surgery, and a community hall. Work will also begin shortly on a medical centre being built by the NHS.”

The Co-op will create around 15 local jobs and focus on fresh and healthy produce, award winning wines, ready meals and pizzas, ‘free-from’ and vegan products, Fairtrade, food-to-go and, everyday essentials.

Shoppers who choose to become Co-op members are rewarded with 2p added to their membership account balance for every pound they spend on the store’s own-brand products. The retailer shares a further 2% with community causes.

Members are also eligible for discounts across the Co-op group to make savings on funerals, insurance policies and legal products and services.

Contactless card payment limits have been increased to £45, making it easier, quicker and safer to shop, and students who are TOTUM cardholders - the new name for NUS Extra – can enjoy a 10% discount off groceries at the Co-op.

The chain has also put measures in place to assist during the Covid-19 emergency: the Co-op Community Shopping Card enables those self-isolating or told to stay at home to shop and pay for their essentials; cards are bought or topped-up by calling 0800 029 4592, allowing friends, families, neighbours or volunteers to shop at the Co-op on their behalf.

The retailer’s Food Share scheme works to minimise food waste and make a difference locally, supporting not-for-profit organisations who work to share food with those in need in the community.

PETERS VILLAGE HISTORY (Part 4)

Following on from the last historical post, it has been speculated that the Peters Works was requisitioned during World War 2 though, to repair small naval vessels.

And there was a WW2 Army presence, with the Royal Engineers using the area for training. They built a temporary Bailey Bridge river crossing, but this was taken down after the war despite residents of both banks wanting to keep it.

The old works site then became home to various light industries and businesses and even a coach firm, but Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council's Local Plan then identified the works as a brown field site ideal for housing, and approved Trenport’s proposals for a new village and bridge in 2006. Delayed then by the economic downturn, it is now due for completion in the early 2020s.

Rather than deny its industrial past as the site of a former cement works and its quarries – reforming the latter allowed the interesting elevations to the various housing phases at Peters Village – Trenport and the local community were keen to promote the site’s heritage and connections with family members who worked there.

As a result, an eye-catching public sculpture reflecting both past industry and the abundant wildlife of the area, greets visitors on the Peters Village roundabout by the new bridge, and the names of the works’ Thames Barge fleet inspired some street names.
