Today is Mabon, the autumn equinox, when the light and darkness stand in balance before the nights begin to draw in.
There’s a lovely Welsh thread to the name. Mabon ap Modron is a figure from the old Welsh tales of the Mabinogi, a mysterious young man taken from his mother as a baby, whose story eventually brings in Arthur and some wonderfully strange Welsh mythology.
The festival we now call Mabon is actually a modern Pagan tradition, rather than an ancient Welsh festival, but I quite like that the name was borrowed from our own old stories.
So today feels like a good excuse to notice the turn of the year: the first chill in the air, apples and blackberries, the hedgerows changing colour, evenings drawing in, and the last of the summer light slipping away.
A little gratitude for what’s been gathered, a little letting go of what’s finished, and a nod to the old Welsh stories that have somehow made it this far.
Croeso, hydref. 🍂🌿
