Did you know who St Giles was? 🔍

Newland Park is located on the edge of the historic village of Chalfont St Giles - but do you know the story behind its name?

St Giles was a 7th-century monk and is regarded as the patron saint of the disabled and wounded animals. Originally from Greece, he travelled to France, where he lived a life of solitude with a single red deer as his only companion.

Legend has it that the King’s hunters pursued the deer into Giles’s retreat and an arrow intended for the deer struck Giles in the leg instead. Because he was wounded while protecting the deer, he became the patron saint of the physically disabled.

Today, the Church of St Giles stands proudly in the centre of the village. Founded by monks in the 12th century, it is home to a beautifully carved Victorian oak porch with intricate detailing that continues to welcome visitors to this day.

It is just one of the many fascinating stories that makes the area surrounding Newland Park so unique.

Pankhurst Apartments - a name with real history behind it

Set within Newland Park, the Pankhurst Apartments form part of a new collection of homes, thoughtfully named to reflect the site’s remarkable history.

In the early 20th century, Newland Park became a place of refuge for suffragettes, including Emmeline Pankhurst, who stayed here while fighting for women’s rights. The estate’s owners, Henry and Agnes Harben, were devoted supporters of the movement, offering safety and care to women recovering after imprisonment.

Here, women were able to regain their strength in the quiet of the countryside before continuing their fight. On one occasion, suffragettes were even hidden within the house to avoid arrest - a powerful reflection of Newland Park’s role in supporting the movement.

Pankhurst played a crucial role in securing women the right to vote, leading a movement that would go on to change the course of British history. Her connection to Newland Park is part of what makes this place so special - not only a place of beauty, but one shaped by resilience and courage.

It is for this reason that the development carries her name, with roads and homes across the Newland Park also named in her honour. Pankhurst Apartments stand as a lasting tribute to the women who found sanctuary here and to the role Newland Park played in their story 🤍
