A new home taking shape near Frome, Somerset.

Built on the site of a former steel-framed barn, this bespoke new build was designed by Orme Architecture with a strong focus on fabric-first performance and creating an efficient, comfortable family home.

The build combines a timber frame with high-performance insulation, alongside air source heating, underfloor heating, MVHR, solar PV and battery storage.

A great example of how thoughtful design and construction can come together to create a home built around the people who will live in it.

It’s all in the details.

A closer look at the external works at the Nye Cottage extension, where stone and brick detailing adds character and helps the new outdoor space sit naturally alongside the existing property.

When working with an existing home, the smaller details matter. Carefully considered materials and finishes can help new additions feel connected to what’s already there, while giving the overall project a cohesive finish.

The finishing touches that bring a project together.

A look at the external works at the Nye Cottage extension, where new paving has created a generous outdoor space that connects naturally with the home.

Carefully considered stonework, brick detailing and paving help the new space sit comfortably alongside the character of the property and its surroundings.

It’s easy to focus on what happens inside an extension, but the external spaces can make just as much difference to how the finished home looks, feels and is enjoyed.

Another look at the transformation of Hobsmoor, near Chard.

A key part of this project involved removing the bungalow's large existing conservatory and replacing it with a purpose-built single-storey extension, creating a more considered and practical addition to the home.

There's something particularly rewarding about projects where we're able to start with a space that no longer quite works and build something new in its place. Hobsmoor gave us exactly that opportunity, while also carefully working with and improving the existing home.

Character worth preserving. A future worth building.

Once used as horse stables, and before that home to cattle, this stone barn was on the verge of collapse.

By carefully rebuilding where needed using the original lias stone from the site, we've helped preserve its history while giving it a new lease of life.

Some buildings deserve a second chapter.

After completing the first phase of this project a few years ago, we were delighted to return and transform this former stone barn into a home for multi-generational living.

Using original lias stone from the site, salvaged roof timbers and even fossils carefully built into the exposed masonry, every detail celebrates the building's history while creating a home that's ready for the future.

It's a project we're incredibly proud to be part of.

Some moments make you stop and look up.

Standing beneath this new oak-framed structure, it's easy to appreciate how a vision starts becoming reality.

This project began with two separate bungalows and a simple question from the client: How can we turn them into one exceptional home? Working alongside , we helped shape the solution before bringing it to life through carefully considered structural alterations and a new central extension that seamlessly connects the two buildings.

There's still plenty of work ahead, but this is one of those milestones where the transformation truly starts to take shape.
