👋 Meet our 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐫 – Matthew Gibbs
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲?
As a Senior Land Surveyor, I am on site every day collecting data and ensuring it is done accurately, efficiently and safely.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭?
I like that every day is different and the brain is always engaged. Plus, we travel the breadth of the Country. I’ve been to Newquay in Cornwall and Loch Ness in Scotland (unfortunately we didn’t see the monster). It helps that we have a great team that take pride in what we do and are a pleasure to work with.
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 / 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞?
This is a bit technical, but the achievement that comes to mind is the accuracy of a control network that I installed. One metric for checking the accuracy of a traverse is the LF error, which is represented as a ratio, and the higher the number the better. The client requirement was 1:40,000 (which is relatively high), the company record was around 1:380,000, but on this occasion I achieved 1:2,000,000.

Before I fell in to surveying, I job hopped quite a lot, trying to find what I enjoyed. I've worked in TV, marketing, sales, retail and hospitality. By working in so many different sectors I realised my strengths and weaknesses, what I liked in a job and what I didn't. I stumbled upon surveying when I was 29 and haven't looked back. There are a lot of people that don't know what they want to do, and that's fine. I think it's important to try different things until you find something that you enjoy.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤
I don’t do it as often as I would like, but I enjoy bouldering at a local indoor centre and being out in the countryside with my 2 dogs. I like to unwind by watching a film whilst snuggled up on the sofa with my wife and the dogs.

Our local park in Norwich has a great dog-friendly cafe where you can sit outside and overlook a beautiful garden with a water fountain. Their homemade sausage rolls are delicious.
