The latest National Housing Federation report highlights something we have been saying for a long time.
Housing is healthcare.
In recent years, waiting for supported housing was the single biggest reason for delayed discharges from mental health inpatient settings. More than 7,200 additional bed days were used in just one month because suitable housing was not available. The report estimates that addressing supported housing shortages could save the NHS between £53 million and £65 million every year.
This is about much more than costs.
When someone is medically ready to leave hospital but has nowhere suitable to go, their recovery is delayed, hospital capacity is reduced, and pressure increases across the entire health and social care system.
Supported housing is not a nice-to-have. It is essential infrastructure.
At Assisted Living Project, our mission is to increase the supply of high-quality supported living accommodation that enables people to live independently, with dignity, in homes that meet their needs.
The challenge is clear. The evidence is there. The need has never been greater.
Now is the time to recognise supported housing as a critical part of the solution.
