This week is all about raising awareness of the important role fire doors play in protecting people and property.

A fire door is more than just a door. When correctly installed and maintained, it is designed to help contain fire and smoke, protect escape routes and give occupants valuable time to get to safety.

Regular checks can help identify damaged seals, faulty closers, excessive gaps and other issues that could prevent a fire door from doing its job when it matters most.

Great to see Zac progressing with his apprenticeship over at Cottingham Joinery. He started out with us at Yorkshire Maintenance and it’s brilliant to see how far he’s coming along.

Meet Zac, Our Bench Joinery Apprentice.
At just 18, Zac Wallis is already building the foundations for a career in joinery.
Zac has always enjoyed making things, with his interest first developing through Design & Technology at school. After spending 18 months with The Yorkshire Maintenance Company, he transferred across to Cottingham Joinery to continue developing his skills and experience.
Alongside his time with us, Zac is working towards his Level 2 Bench Joinery qualification at Hull College, attending one day a week. His college days combine theory in the morning with practical work in the afternoon, where he gets hands-on experience making doors and other joinery pieces.
Back in the workshop, Zac is currently working alongside Nick in assembly, putting what he’s learning at college into practice every day.
Zac is due to complete his college course in January 2027, and his goal is to secure a full-time position with us once his apprenticeship is complete. We’re looking forward to seeing how he continues to develop over the coming months.
And when he’s not in the workshop? You’ll probably find Zac fishing, following Manchester United or planning his next holiday.

We’re looking for an experienced Traditional Wood Machinist to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis.
If you’re passionate about woodworking, take pride in your craftsmanship and have experience working with traditional woodworking machinery, we’d love to hear from you.
The role will involve setting and operating machinery including:
• Re-saw & Crosscut
• Planer Thicknesser
• 5-Head Planer Moulder
• Spindle Moulder
• Mortisers
• Dimension Saw
You’ll be working with a variety of high-quality materials, including Oak, Ash, Beech and Walnut, alongside plywoods, veneers and more.
We’re looking for someone with hands-on machining experience who can work accurately from CAD drawings, has experience with tooling set-up and maintenance, and enjoys being part of a skilled, supportive team.

A nice little job through the workshop this week.

A member of the public came in after being recommended to us, looking to match this original timber fascia from a bay window on a property in Beverley.

Being in a conservation area, the aim was simple — match the existing profile as closely as possible rather than replace it with something modern and off-the-shelf.

Original on the left, newly made replacement on the right.

It’s the sort of job we enjoy: taking an existing piece, working out the profile and reproducing it in timber so the character of the building can be retained.

A staircase isn't just about connecting two floors.
It's often one of the first things people notice when they enter a building.
Just a few months ago, this space didn't even have one. Seeing it transformed into a feature that complements the character of the building is incredibly rewarding.
From the bespoke steelwork to the integrated lighting and exposed brickwork, every element has come together to create a staircase that's as functional as it is striking.

Preserving heritage while delivering essential works.
Our team has recently completed the initial access works at this Grade II Listed building, with our specialist scaffolding division, Stratus Scaffolding, providing the safe and secure platform required ahead of major roofing works.
