Interior design starts with understanding the problem
How do you create a guest room that sleeps four people, feels bright and fun for visiting family, and still sits comfortably within a 300-year-old cottage?
In this room, the answer was to look up
Rather than trying to squeeze everything onto the existing floor space, we imagined a sleeping deck above
Once we’d checked that the floor structure could safely take the additional load, we had rails built and a ladder installed to create an extra sleeping area
That then allowed us to reposition the main bed and make room for a sofa bed and chest of drawers below
The result?
A vibrant, practical guest room that can comfortably sleep four without feeling overcrowded — and still feels completely at home within the character of the cottage
For me, this is what good interior design is really about.
Understanding how a space needs to work first, then finding a creative way to make it happen.
Sometimes the solution isn’t more space.
It’s simply looking at the space differently.
