At intervals, regulators like the UK's MCA require both large and small vessels in commercial use to be assessed to ensure their stability data remains valid. We were tasked to carry out a Lightship Survey of this historic Thames Sailing Barge on behalf of its owners, working with MCA's surveyors, Master and crew to carry out the measurements and analysis needed, one of many carried out over the years.... and yes, we have carried out a Lightship Survey on a "Lightship" (Light Vessel) as well!

Important MCA Update: New Regulations phasing in this week ⚓

The MCA has confirmed that the new Merchant Shipping (Vessels in Commercial Use for Sport or Pleasure) Regulations 2025 will begin to apply from 12 December 2025.

These updates modernise safety standards and provide a framework for alternative fuels. The regulations apply initially to new vessels entering the Code for the first time, with a gradual transition for existing vessels. Ensuring compliance is critical. Whether you are coding a new vessel or managing a renewal, our YDSA Coding Surveyors are best placed to guide you through these changes.

Sea water specific gravity measurements with an independently-calibrated hydrometer, an important part of a recent inclining experiment. A detailed stability information book was prepared and subsequently approved by the Classification Society. One of many completed over the years for commercial, workboat, sail training, yacht and other vessels.
