✨ Big osprey news from the Isle of Anglesey in Wales! The island’s first-ever breeding pair has laid their first eggs — and the female, 3C2, has been identified as a 2024 Scottish ringed chick from Seafield & Strathspey Estates. Looks like she was heading home but decided Wales was the place to be.

✨ In other news…. you’ll remember the post about the osprey nest rebuild earlier this year on Kinveachy – the ospreys have returned and are incubating happily on the new platform.

Before the ospreys migratory return journey from Western Africa, we took the decision to renew one of our osprey nests. It was last done in 2017. The old larch pole was rotting and in danger of collapsing. To ensure the nest was safe for this seasons nesting we set about taking the old pole down to replace it with an ex utilities pole and new nest platform. Click on the photos 📸 below for further details. Thanks to Donald Powell, Ruari Law of Instinct and Matthew MacDonell Fencing & Contracting.

** Osprey Chick Update **
In 2025, we donated an osprey chick to the Valencia Region in the East of Spain. The chick was fitted with ring number 20U and was released in July in the Pego-Oliva Marsh in Alcante along with 11 other birds from Scotland. They fledged and eventually left on migration to Africa. It is hoped that 20U will return to the Pego-Oliva Marsh in 2027 or 2028.

Every day is a school day! We were delighted to support Lantra Scotland and Countryside Learning Scotland at the Grantown Grammar School rural careers fair. Our head gamekeeper Ewan was accompanied by our trainee gamekeeper Gordy, a former Grantown Grammar pupil. It was great to speak to lots of enthusiastic young people all keen to find out about a career in gamekeeping, deer stalking and integrated land management. Thanks to Ellen Grant for asking us along.

We recently hosted a return visit from P6/P7 pupils from Carrbridge Primary School to the Allt Lorgy, which is a tributary of the River Dulnain. The Allt Lorgy is an award winning river restoration project close to Carrbridge. We had a great time with the children who learnt all about how the Lorgy has found its natural course, due to the restoration project, and how this has helped boost salmon and trout stocks. The children planted oaks and bird cherry saplings. We talked about the variety of wildlife that live in or close to the Lorgy everything from fish and frogs to white tailed eagles and deer.
A big thank to the Spey Catchment Initiative and Instinct Wildlife Guiding for their valuable input and helping on the day.

5.30pm Sunday evening - smoke was seen at the Black Mount between Carrbridge and the Slochd. Our gamekeeping staff were quick on the scene along with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. We were able to bring the fire under control quickly before it could spread to a wider area. Thanks to Fi from the CNPA ranger team who happened to be passing on the A9 and called the emergency services. While we can't say for sure how the fire was started - there was no evidence of a BBQ or campfire - it would appear to have been started deliberately.
