It’s become a running joke at this point.
The moment agents realise I’m the surveyor, It can go from “hello” to persona non grata in nano seconds. Suddenly there’s a lot of “are you sure you don’t want to use someone else” energy, a few pointed comments and a not so subtle attempt to steer my client toward a ‘preferred possibly non RICS qualified’ surveyor instead.
Here’s the thing though, I take it as a compliment. What they’re really telling my client is: this surveyor actually finds things. I don’t skim it, I don’t rubber stamp it, and I don’t play nice with issues that should be flagged.
If an agent is working that hard to get you to use someone else, that’s not a red flag about me. That’s a red flag about the property.
So to any purchasers reading this: if your agent suddenly gets twitchy about who’s doing your survey, take note. That reaction is usually telling you more than the property listing ever will.
