Explosion in Moubray Hall!

"General Committee meeting, Mowbray Hall, Powmill. 30th Oct. 1934.

The General Committee met this evening. Mr Lawrie presiding. The Hall Caretaker reported that on the Thursday evening 25th Oct., about 10 o’clock after the members had left the Hall, one of the petrol lamps which hangs from the ceiling exploded and was shattered to pieces. Two panes of glass & one of the window frames were broken & the bolts and lock of the main entrance door bent out of position. No further damage to the Hall can be ascertained".

How very fortunate that the hall wasn't burnt down

An excellent talk in the hall last night on the history of Rumbling Bridge followed by some interesting conversations on local history.
Thanks to Dr Phil Back who gave the talk and Fossoway Community Development Trust who sponsored the event.

Did you know that the gorge at Rumbling Bridge was a must-see for nineteenth century visitors? The arrival of the Devon Valley Railway at Rumbling Bridge in 1863 has been said to have transformed Rumbling Bridge from a not-so-quiet ‘backwater’ into a tourist hot spot.
