Understanding the Scale of Our National Debt
It’s hard to truly grasp what £2.6 trillion of National Debt or an £84 billion Annual Budget Deficit looks like. These numbers are so vast that they feel abstract—but they have real consequences.
So, I did some simple maths to put it into perspective. If you’re upset about tax rises or spending cuts, consider this:
A Generational Reflection
I’m 54 years old, which means I’ve had a vote—and an opinion—for 36 years. During that time, I’ve allowed this situation to develop. Our generation has benefited from decisions that added to this debt, yet we’re not strong enough to resolve it.
Instead, we will pass the baton to our children and their children. They will inherit the responsibility for choices we made—or avoided—over decades.
Passing the baton means future generations will either:
Pay higher taxes,
Accept lower public services,
Or innovate dramatically to grow the economy.
Perspective on £2.6 Trillion National Debt
If you stacked £50 notes, £2.6 trillion would reach over 1,100 miles high—almost twice the height of the International Space Station orbit.
If you paid £1 every second, it would take over 82,000 years to clear £2.6 trillion.
Or 605,000 new taxes raising the same as the new Mansion tax.
Perspective on £84 Billion Annual Budget Deficit
£84 billion is roughly:
More than the entire NHS England annual budget for hospitals and GP services combined.
Enough to build over 280,000 average UK homes at £300,000 each.
Or 20,000 new taxes all raising the same as the new mansion tax
