Wildlife and Wireless

A Webinar on the Environmental Impacts of Electromagnetic Radiation With Experts in Science, Policy and Law

Date: Thursday May 4, 2023, Time: 1:00 PM EST

An invitation from Environmental Health Trust

New wireless networks – including cell towers and small cells mounted on utility poles – are being erected in national parks, wilderness areas, and urban and suburban ecosystems increasing ambient levels of nonionizing radiofrequency radiation.

A landmark three-part review, “Effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields on flora and fauna,” authored by B. Blake Levitt, National Association of Science Writers; Henry C. Lai, PhD., University of Washington professor emeritus and former Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine editor-in-chief; and Albert M. Manville II, PhD., retired senior wildlife biologist at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, documents 1,200 studies indicating a myriad of harmful effects to wildlife even at very low exposure levels. The authors found that all animal species were affected.

This webinar features presentations by two co-authors of the above review:

* Albert M. Manville II PhD., is a retired senior wildlife biologist at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Senior Lecturer and Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University.

* B. Blake Levitt is an award-winning medical/science journalist, author, and editor who has researched the biological effects of nonionizing radiation since the late 1970's. She has participated in congressional briefings and published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the field.

In addition, scientists and policy experts will highlight their critical research and the regulatory issues that frame the current state of affairs:

* Daniel Favre, PhD., Wildlife Biologist, will present his research, "Mobile phone-induced honeybee worker piping.”

* Dr. Cornelia Waldmann-Selsam will present her study on the impact of radiofrequency radiation to trees along with an updated report on her latest research.

* Erica Rosenberg, retired FCC attorney, previously Assistant Chief of the Competition and Infrastructure Policy Division at the FCC, will share highlights of her article 'Environmental Procedures at the FCC: A Case Study in Corporate Capture on how the FCC has failed to follow environmental laws'.

* Devra Davis PhD., MPH, President of Environmental Health Trust will present research she has co-authored with Dr. Malka Halgamuge on the impacts of wireless to plants and give an update on the EHT et al. lawsuit against the FCC related to wildlife impacts.

* Theodora Scarato, Executive Director of Environmental Health Trust will highlight U.S. state and federal as well as international policy actions.

You are 'cordially invited' to take part in this Ofcom consultation, which was published today; Monday 13th March. Details and link below. This is your chance to have your say. Your responses must be submitted by Monday 22nd May.

--------

"Ofcom has today confirmed that it will make millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum across the 26 GHz and 40 GHz bands available for new mobile technology, including 5G services.

This could deliver significant benefits by enabling large wireless data capacity and speeds. It can be used to improve mobile services and deliver innovative new services across the UK.

It will be particularly beneficial in locations and venues with a lot of mobile users, such as train stations, football stadiums and concerts, where demands on current networks mean mobile data speeds can be sluggish.

As well as mobile services, mmWave spectrum could, in future, also support innovative wireless applications requiring large amounts of data, very high speeds, or both. Early indications suggest this could include applications such as virtual reality, factory automation, and intelligent transport systems such as driverless cars.

We expect that new uses of mmWave spectrum will be mostly concentrated in areas with high levels of data traffic such as towns and cities. Ofcom will award citywide licences to use mmWave spectrum by auction and assign licenses for more localised licences on a first come, first served basis, using our Shared Access licensing framework.

We are now consulting on proposals for the design of the auction for citywide licences, the licence conditions for citywide and local mmWave licences, and how we will coordinate users of this spectrum.

We are inviting responses to the consultation by 22 May 2023."

We have set out how we will allocate millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum across the country for a variety of uses. We are also consulting on proposals for the design of the auction, the licence conditions and how we will coordinate users of this spectrum.

Excerpt from article:

"While microwave radiation from wireless technology and magnetic & electric fields from electrical wiring are critically important, EMI is equally problematic for human biology. It’s a part of the EMF spectrum that gets very little attention. However, it is a major contributor to electrical sensitivity and poor health. Hopefully this article will help you understand and reduce an important source of EMI in your home – the fiber optic internet infrastructure that is becoming common throughout our communities."

Fiber optic internet is thought to be completely safe. It is if installed correctly. However, in many cases, high amounts of EMI is created from the equipment.

LOW-EMF REFUGES – Are they as 'low-EMF' as they claim?

You may have come across websites advertising low-EMF refuges and retreats, where people wanting to escape electrosmog can go for short breaks, or long-term stays. There are many of these places dotted around Europe, USA, Canada and other parts of the world, all offering low-EMF sanctuaries, with some places listed as being suitable for people with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS).

We were recently contacted by an EHS individual who wanted to share their experiences of living at one particular refuge in Europe. On its website, this refuge is advertised as a permaculture farm ... “free from EMF/microwaves radiations”. The farm aims to … “focus on human contact, connecting with nature and handycrafts instead of dealing with electronics and media”. The website reiterates that the farm is a … “microwaves FREE place” … “there is no Wireless coverage of any kind” … “we do not use any type of microwave generating devices” … and so on.

You might think that this is the perfect place to escape to, if you're suffering with EHS. However, according to the individual who contacted us, the farm is far from the EHS haven that they were led to believe, despite repeated assurances from the farm owner, before a commitment was made.

The individual tells us that the farm is badly affected by radar and 4G signals, and there are electricity pylons surrounding the farm. We're told that the farm owner's children and other, non-EHS visitors often use their smart phones while on the site. We're also told that other sufferers of EHS have experienced a worsening of their symptoms as a result of staying there – and they were all charged a fee for the privilege.

When we checked out the area online, we found the high-voltage electricity pylons that were mentioned. These are clearly visible from the farm, just a few tens of metres away, certainly too close for comfort. A mobile network coverage map does indeed show that there is 4G in the area. There are also two heliports within a few miles' radius of the farm, which might explain the presence of radar signals there.

To be fair, the farm owner may not realise how far radar can travel, or be aware of the issues with high-voltage powerlines, and the website may have been written a few years ago, before the 4G transmitter was installed in the area. If this is the case, then website needs to be updated.

Also, we found that the farm is advertised on Air BnB, and although the listing states that there is no WiFi available on site, there is no stipulation about the use of smart phones. The farm may purport to be a “microwaves FREE place”, and, as it states on it's page; “.....a place free from smoking, drinking, drugs, EMF/microwave radiation and wifi”, but it is certainly not a refuge suitable for those with EHS.

A useful website that lists many EHS refuges and retreats located around world, including the permaculture farm, gives the following words of caution and wisdom for anyone thinking of heading out to one of these refuges:

“PLEASE NOTE: Some of the places ..... may not be as free from signal as they need to be, or as they once were. This list is simply a starting point for you in your search for safe haven. Most electrosensitive people are finding there is no safe haven anywhere that is ready and waiting to take them. Rather, people need to go out and find or create a safe haven for themselves.”

So, if you're looking for a refuge to escape to, once Coronavirus travel restrictions are eased, do some thorough research before making a commitment. There is a lot that can be investigated online. Check out the surrounding area on Google Maps. Seek feedback from previous visitors of the refuge that you have in mind – but remember that one person's level of sensitivity is different to another's. Find out if the refuge is open to members of the public during your stay and check out what others say about the refuge on trusted review sites. Don't rely on the word of the refuge owner, or on the advert's description. If it's a long-term stay you're thinking of, you could hire the services of a reputable EMF surveyor - one that is local to the area – who can go on your behalf to survey the site before you make a decision to move there.

I would like to see a full independent investigation and report to declare the findings on the 5G network in relation to radio activity and the health implications.

Pets and Wi-Fi: A Bad Combination - by Naturalist Activist, 17th April 2020

There’s a good reason why pharmaceutical companies test drugs on animals before moving on to human trials. We’re a lot more alike than we are different, and we share over 95% of our genes with mice, cats, dogs and other creatures. What affects them is likely to affect us, and vice-versa. So when your pet starts getting sick, you might want to ask yourself if what’s affecting Fluffy could also be harming you.

A great many of the studies on the effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from wireless technologies have been done on animals, including the recent NTP study. To conclude, as the New York Times, did, that findings of cancer and DNA damage don’t apply to humans because the study used rats is to misunderstand the basis of all pharmaceutical research. Animal studies matter. Animals matter.

When pets get sick, people should worry. In the article, “Can EMFs Affect Your Pets?” Dr. Patricia Johnson points out that wireless radiation from any source causes DNA strand breaks and oxidative stress, disrupts cell metabolism and brain glucose metabolism, reduces melatonin, permeates the blood-brain barrier and generates stress proteins. Pets develop behavioural problems such as aggression, increased anxiety and agitation, as well as a variety of health problems including cancers (she gives examples of two dogs who developed cancers after sleeping next to smart meters). She says, “...both humans and animals are sharing the same chronic diseases, mental and behavioural issues.”

As a dog-owner, I’ve seen for myself how badly animals can be affected by EMFs. We have two dogs, and they were both perfectly healthy until we moved to a flat in our local town. Within a few weeks, the problems started. Both animals started to shed, and one developed a nasty condition where her coat gave off a sticky white discharge. Allergies, the vet said, and suggested we change her food. It didn’t help. Nothing helped.

The other dog, meanwhile, began to have terrible nightmares—night terrors from which she couldn’t awake. We would have to get up, wake her and comfort her. These got worse as time went on. We couldn’t understand what was causing them. However, we did notice that every time we took a trip in our camping van, both dogs improved drastically. A month in the wilds and their coats would shine, nightmares would vanish, and both dogs seemed immeasurably healthier. We felt better too. So what was wrong with our flat in town?

It was only after I learned about the effects of EMR and read many of the independent scientific studies on that subject* that I understood what was affecting the dogs—and us. Cell tower radiation, Wi-Fi, radiation from cordless phones and cell phones all cause oxidative stress and damage the immune system. A town—any town—has all of these, and the radiation from wireless technology and infrastructure permeates the environment.

We didn’t use wireless technology ourselves, but there is public Wi-Fi all over town, and in our home we could get as many as 30 Wi-Fi signals from other people’s homes and businesses, many of them full-strength. The frequency Wi-Fi uses, 2.45 GHz, is especially biologically active, and this makes it especially dangerous to health. It makes people and animals sick. And while people may not notice the effects on themselves, they do notice when their pets aren’t well.

We weren’t the only people having problems with our pets. We met a lot of other people who also complained that their pets weren’t well. Excessive shedding was a major problem. Another was aggression. Dogs that didn’t use to be aggressive were staring to growl at other dogs and attack them. Instead of letting dogs meet and greet each other, pet owners were starting to avoid each other, pulling on leads to keep dogs out of each other’s way. “I don’t know what’s got into my dog lately,” one woman told me. “She used to be so friendly, but now I don’t trust her with other dogs.”

Aggression is a symptom of electrosensitivity, and it affects a lot of dogs. When dogs turn vicious, it’s extremely serious. There have been two cases in Spain where pet dogs have killed their owners, in one case a married couple, and in another case a woman and her mother. There was also a horrific case in Greece where a house dog killed the family’s newborn baby. Was it their own Wi-Fi that led to these tragedies? It’s possible. Animals have no way to tell their owners they’re feeling bad, that they can’t cope, and no way of identifying what bothers them.

Sometimes it is possible to persuade people to turn off the Wi-Fi for their pets’ sake if not their own. It’s not easy here in Greece, where awareness of the dangers of wireless is not widespread and Wi-Fi is advertised on TV as a must-have for every home, but when people are really worried about their pets they’ll try anything. If they see that their dog stops shedding, becomes less aggressive around other dogs, or begins to recover from other conditions, they can see for themselves that there is indeed a link between EMR and health, and see the implications for their own health. Even if there is still Wi-Fi from other sources, turning off the router in one’s own home is a good start.

Pet health and owner health aren’t separate issues. What affects our pets affects us, and vice versa. Animals tend to be smaller than humans and are more likely to develop symptoms of electrosensitivity or ill health before we do. It’s a warning we should heed. We did, and a year ago we moved out into the countryside where there are no Wi-Fi signals. In days both dogs had stopped shedding, their coats became glossy again, and the little one stopped having those terrible nightmares. We feel better, too.

So I hope, in this time when everyone is locked down at home, that you’ve turned the Wi-Fi off. All EMFs affect our health, and this is not a time—if there is ever a time—when we want to get sick.

*One of the best papers on Wi-Fi is Dr. Martin Pall’s, below. I highly recommend it for those who haven’t read it.
