At our latest Leaders.inc quarterly economic update, members stepped back from the day-to-day property headlines to look at the wider economic forces shaping confidence and market conditions.

We were joined by Louise Cooper, former Goldman Sachs stockbroker, financial journalist with the BBC and The Times, and now Senior Lecturer in Finance at Kingston University.

Her message: think in systems, not headlines.

Louise explored what happens when:
• Growth slows
• Public spending rises
• Debt becomes more expensive to service
• Incentives across the economy begin to shift

Members also responded to live polling on investment plans, hiring appetite and the impact of tax decisions, which sparked plenty of discussion.

We finished by looking at the key drivers for residential property, including interest rates, inflation, wages, employment and consumer confidence and why assumptions in this market need testing.
