Sash windows have been part of British architecture for over 300 years and some are still doing their job today.

From the smaller panes of the Georgian era to the larger glass and simpler glazing patterns of Victorian homes, sash windows have evolved alongside changes in architecture and glassmaking.

And while modern replacements have become commonplace, many original timber sash windows were built to be maintained and repaired, meaning age alone doesn’t necessarily mean they need replacing.

At LDP Restorations, we believe in preserving what can be saved, retaining the craftsmanship and character that make period properties what they are.

Before → After. Repair rather than replace.

A recent restoration project in Bewdley, where several areas of the original timberwork had suffered from rot and deterioration.

Damaged and rotten sections were carefully removed, new timber and cill fronts were fitted where required, and the repaired areas were finished with a fresh coat of paint.

All while retaining as much of the existing timberwork as possible.

The result is original windows and entrance looking smart & fresh again, ready for the homeowners to put the property on the market.

Rotten timber doesn’t automatically mean it needs replacing. Sometimes, the right repair is all it needs.

A slightly unusual job for LDP today… 🎬

We were called out to Wordsley Manor House after a film crew needed one of the original windows for a particular shot but first, a pane of glass needed replacing.

A quick bit of work from Louis and the window was ready for its moment on camera 🎥

Definitely not a job that comes along every day!

These casement windows had areas of rotten timber, but that didn’t mean they needed to be completely replaced.

We carefully restored the windows, removed the old draught proofing that had become dirty and flattened, repaired the affected areas, repainted the windows and waterproofed the timber to help protect them going forward.

The result is freshly repaired & restored windows while retaining the original character of the property.

Restore or replace? 🪟

When sash windows start showing signs of age, replacing them completely can seem like the obvious solution…
but it isn’t always necessary.

Where the original windows are still repairable, restoration can often:

• Avoid the expense of unnecessary full replacement
• Retain the original character and craftsmanship of your property
• Repair damaged areas while keeping sound original timber
• Improve draught proofing, operation and overall performance
• Preserve important architectural features of period properties

Of course, there are times when replacement is the more practical option, which is why every window should be assessed on its individual condition.

Don’t replace what can be restored.

This entrance frame had areas around the bottom of rotten timber that needed attention, but rather than replacing the entire frame, the damaged sections were repaired using a combination of new timber and resin where appropriate.

The customer also wanted to add a little more character to the entrance, so two new decorative plinth blocks were created and incorporated into the frame.

A great example of how tired and damaged timber can often be carefully repaired while retaining the character of the property.

Rattling sash windows? There’s usually a reason behind it.

Over time, gaps can develop, components can wear and the sashes themselves may no longer sit as securely within the frame as they once did.

A beautiful original feature, restored to full glory!

This stained glass panel in a front door in Wolverhampton had been damaged, so it was carefully removed, repaired and refitted. Preserving the character of the original door rather than replacing it.

Traditional features like these are worth saving wherever possible, and with the right repair work they can be given a new lease of life.
