GATEHOUSE OF FLEET | Where coast, countryside and centuries of stories meet 🌿
Gatehouse of Fleet is much more than a pretty Scottish town. Sitting beside the Water of Fleet within a National Scenic Area, it’s one of those places where you can spend the morning exploring history, the afternoon walking through woodland and still make it to the coast before dinner.
The town itself grew rapidly in the 18th century as a cotton-manufacturing centre. Today, its industrial past lives on at The Mill on the Fleet, a restored cotton mill with exhibitions about the area, local arts and crafts, a riverside café and a second-hand bookshop containing more than 20,000 books.
Just outside town stands Cardoness Castle, a six-storey 15th-century tower house built for the McCulloch family. Its history includes family feuds, murder, an ex*****on in Edinburgh and even a two-storey pit prison.
For something even older, walk up to Trusty’s Hill, where mysterious Pictish symbols are carved into the rock at an ancient hillfort. Then there’s Anwoth Old Kirk, built around 1626 and later used as a filming location for cult classic The Wicker Man.
Nature lovers have Cally Woods on the doorstep, home to red squirrels, buzzards and beautiful woodland walks, while sandy beaches, Fleet Bay and the wild landscapes of Galloway Forest Park are all within easy reach.
And after a day exploring? Stay somewhere with a little history of its own.
