Throughout my career very gradually women have increased their role from
nowhere in the Construction Industry. For one of my last ever projects the unusual situation at the last project meeting for the conversion of St Mary’s Church Ratho to a sculpture workshop, that apart from me the whole project team was refreshingly made up of women! The Client is Graciela Ainsworth of Graciela Ainsworth Conservation Workshop, the Architect is Aurelie Brunton of Benjamin Tindall Architects, the Contractor is Dawn Read MD of Hutton and Read and the CDM Advisor is Linda Bibby from MQSN. The Engineer Amanda Kaas of Narro wasn’t at the meeting. Shame there was no photo of this momentous event!

Scott Lee 1951-2022
I would like to pay tribute to Architect Scott Lee who died last week age 71 as he was one of the greatest influences of my career as he gave me the most encouragement me to break away from Armours and set up on my own practice in 1999.
He was along with Steve Boyd as one of the two partners who set up LEEBOYD in the late 1980’s and I think we were working with them on Bank of Scotland projects when Scott fortuitously phoned the Buildings Manager of the National Library of Scotland on the day he was looking for an Architect for a small project. Many successful collaborative projects came out of this not just with the National Library, but with the National Museums of Scotland and National Galleries of Scotland, culminating with us both being awarded the mid 1990’s £7m prestigious Refurbishment of the main National Library building on George IV Bridge.
When this and the various Bank of Scotland projects in Edinburgh ended (Tweed House and Teviott House) and Dunfermline (Visa Centre) Armours then planned in the late 1990’s to move back out of Edinburgh and back to the West. I had moved house East for them in about 1988 to run the Edinburgh office and having settled in the East I now didn’t want to go back or commute. It was Scott who was the greatest influence in encouraging me to start up my own business, including helping me land almost right away two £1m QS commissions at (Bonnington House and Greenbank Parish Church) to set me well on my way. We continued our collaboration and friendship beyond his early retirement including me being trusted as the QS for his own glass lounge extension in 2003 (pictured).
I have so much to be grateful to Scott for the support and collaboration and friendship over many years, and I remember well how we regularly put the world to rights over smorgasbord and a glass of wine at the Canny Man's.

We re-visited this week one of our recent CDM projects - the “building” elements at Saughton Park in Edinburgh- a new cafe (Now called The Garden Bistro), the existing stables block refurbished as an education centre, and the Winter Gardens which had the polycarbonate removed and fully reglazed with glass. It was part of a larger £5million lottery funded project that also reinstated the bandstand and complety overhauled the planting scheme. I was truly impressed with the result, the planting is the best I have ever seen! If you are close put it on your ‘must visit’ list. There is a new car park to the West side accessed from Stenhouse Avenue then through the stone pillars

After not being in our office at Overshiel Farm for over a year due the Covid 19 pandemic, we finally waved goodbye to it at the end of March 2021. I hired a shipping container for the files I have to keep and and formally set up properly in a spare bedroom at home. As Linda was in my bubble we had already been working from my home from July 2020 following the first lockdown restrictions ending. We certainly have managed the transition fine, and despite everything, the work has kept coming in, and we have always been busy!
