We recently enjoyed a rare, close-up encounter with Prudence, the bronze statue atop the copper dome of the Royal Society of Edinburgh on George Street.

Taking advantage of the clear weather, we conducted a comprehensive drone survey across the Society’s two Category A listed buildings.

The Society originally moved into 22-24 George Street in 1909 after vacating their rooms at what is now the Royal Scottish Academy. In the 1990s, they expanded by acquiring the neighboring “White Building” - a name earned by its striking Portland Stone facade which creates a unique contrast with the typical Craigleith sandstone of its New Town neighbours.

As architects working with the United Kingdom’s places of worship since 1977, our approach to caring for these heritage sites is ever evolving.

It is a common misconception that quinquennial inspection surveys concern only preservation and repair.

Read Simpson & Brown partner, Scott Lindsay’s, myth-busting article on our innovative approaches to ensuring we provide these sites with sustainable futures in our changing world.

We are thrilled to announce that the Black Bull Close project in Dunbar has received the EAA 2025 Community Award.

The project was spearheaded by Kate Darrah, Managing Director of The Ridge SCIO, a charity dedicated to providing training and support to local residents of Dunbar and the surrounding area. Kate held an ambitious vision: to transform a set of ruinous Category B listed 18th-century buildings off the High Street into a vibrant new home for the charity and a community hub for the town. Crucially, all works were undertaken by their in-house construction company and social enterprise, The Ridge Foundations, and their team of trainees.

Simpson & Brown collaborated closely with The Ridge to develop proposals for the comprehensive restoration and extension of the buildings at Black Bull Close. The result is a stunning transformation that now includes a series of much-needed community spaces, offices, and a sheltered community garden. Work commenced on site in December 2022 and was successfully completed earlier this year. Throughout the build, specialist contractors worked alongside trainees, imparting a wide range of expertise in both traditional skills and modern construction methods.

The completed project has generated a wealth of benefits to Dunbar; brought derelict buildings off the High Street back into use, created new community spaces, and facilitated the training of local young people in traditional skills like lime work, stonemasonry and joinery increasing their employment opportunities. Simpson & Brown is delighted to continue its partnership with The Ridge and their amazing team. Work is soon to commence on our next collaborative project which will see the creation of six new homes, a retail space and offices on an adjacent high street plot.

On Monday we welcomed the Doolan Award judging panel to Fairburn Tower. The tower has been shortlisted alongside three other projects for the coveted award for the best building in Scotland 2025. Anna Keay of the and associate Julie Barklie, winner of the 2025 RIAS Project Architect of the Year, outlined the fascinating history of the tower and its complex route to restoration. We are immensely proud to be part of such a strong shortlist which showcases the depth and breadth of skill within Scottish architecture today.

Today saw the official opening of Black Bull Close, Dunbar by Councillor Norman Hampshire. Simpson & Brown started this project in 2017 and overcame many challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic impact of the Russia-Ukraine War to design and deliver a community facility that our client, The Ridge can be proud of.

Constructed in-house by The Ridge Foundations, the majority of the work was undertaken by trainees and is a model of how a local socially-aware organisation can create something very special.

One of our unique shopfront projects in Edinburgh is threatened by a current listed building consent application for its removal. In the 1980s we were commissioned to design a new frontage for Trotters Opticians on George Street.

A key aspect of the design are was the two timber columns topped with spectacle inspired volute capitals, which became affectionately known as the ‘ophthalmic order’.

It has been heartening to see the objections to the proposed removal by individuals and organisations who appreciated their contributions to the architecture of George Street. A similar shopfront we designed for Thins bookshop on the opposite side of the street, featuring carved capitals representing open books with our design drawings displayed on the pages inside, was embraced by Lululemon when they took on the shop – the only change being that our original drawings were replaced by images of yoga poses! We hope that Trotter’s spectacles can be embraced in a similar way.

An exciting new exhibition organised by the .edinburgh as part of the programme opened yesterday at Mote 102 in Edinburgh. In response to this year’s Archifringe theme of Reciprocity, the exhibition focuses on demolition materials and their past identity as part of the built fabric to raise awareness around circular economy challenges, speculate on the topic of reuse and highlight the potential of these existing materials.

With the help the and Robertson Group we have been able to contribute a selection of salvaged items from Thomas Hamilton’s Royal High School as it is transformed into the National Centre for Music.
