😎 Enjoy the Sunshine, not the Burn 🍳🍳

πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œ We all wait a long time for Scottish summer, so it's only right to enjoy it while it lasts! πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œ

A little consideration goes a long way towards helping everyone enjoy the warmer weather.

β˜€ β˜€ β˜€ Stay sun safe β˜€ β˜€ β˜€
Even when there's a breeze coming off the Firth of Forth, UV levels can still be high. Sunscreen, hats and plenty of water are your best friends.

πŸ”Š Keep noise reasonable
Open windows mean sound travels much further than usual. If you're enjoying music or spending time in the garden or balcony, please remember that neighbours may also be working from home or relaxing nearby.

πŸͺŸ Keep windows secure
If you're heading out for the day, perhaps to Portobello Beach or a stroll around Holyrood Park β€” Remember to close and secure accessible windows before leaving the property.

πŸ«‚ Look out for each other
Hot weather can be particularly difficult for older neighbours or anyone with health conditions. A quick friendly check-in can make a real difference.

After all, warm weather in Edinburgh doesn't come around every week β€” let's all enjoy it while it's here. 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🏠 β˜€ Summer Property Health Check β›‘

Summer is a brilliant time to give your home a quick once-over.
Spending just a few minutes now can help prevent small issues becoming larger repairs later.

🚨 Check your smoke alarms - Press the test button to make sure they're working correctly. It only takes a few seconds but provides valuable peace of mind.

πŸ’¨ Keep vents clear - It may seem counter-intuitive during warmer weather, but ventilation remains important all year round. Avoid blocking extractor fans or air vents.

🧰🧰 Report maintenance early - If you notice a dripping tap, loose handle, faulty appliance or anything else needing attention, please let us know. Small repairs are usually much quicker (and cheaper) to resolve than larger ones.

🏠 Keep an eye on outside areas - If your property has gutters, downpipes or external drains visible, let us know if you notice anything unusual before heavy summer showers arrive. β›ˆβ›ˆβ›ˆ

Looking after the little things helps keep your home safe, comfortable and in great condition.

🌿 Looking After Your Garden During Summer πŸͺ΄

If you're lucky enough to have a garden, patio or shared outdoor space, summer is the perfect time to enjoy it. πŸ’–

A little regular maintenance helps keep everything looking great for everyone - Keep the grass under control

During periods of sunshine, grass can grow surprisingly quickly. An occasional cut keeps the garden looking tidy without becoming a major job. πŸƒ

Give plants a helping hand πŸ«—
Watering in the early morning or evening helps plants cope with warmer weather while making the best use of water.

Keep pathways clear βœ‚
Removing weeds from paths and patios not only improves appearance but also helps prevent slips when the inevitable Scottish rain returns.

BBQ safely πŸ–
Who doesn't enjoy the occasional barbecue when Edinburgh reaches 25Β°C? If you're having one, please keep it well away from fences, sheds and buildings, and always dispose of ashes safely once completely cool.

Looking after outdoor spaces now makes them much easier to maintain throughout the rest of the year.

⚑ Beat the Heat Without Breaking the Bank πŸ’Έ

Air conditioning might be rare in Scotland, but that doesn't mean staying cool has to be expensive. Here are a few simple ways to keep energy costs down during warmer weather.

Visit Air conditioned stores, libraries, museums etc. They provide the air conditioning so you don't have to!

Use fans efficiently - A fan uses far less electricity than portable air conditioning units and can make a room feel significantly cooler.

Switch off what you're not using - Computers, televisions and games consoles all produce heat even when on standby. Switching them off properly saves electricity and helps keep rooms cooler.

Cook smarter - Consider using the microwave, slow cooker or even enjoying a cold meal occasionally rather than heating the kitchen with the oven.

Let cooler air in naturally - Opening windows once temperatures begin to fall can cool your property without costing a penny.

Every little saving adds up, especially with household energy costs remaining higher than many of us would like.

How to Keep Scotland Homes Cool During an Edinburgh Heatwave

There's no denying it – when Edinburgh starts feeling more like Barcelona than Bruntsfield, we all need to find ways to stay comfortable at home.

Most Scottish homes are designed to keep heat in rather than out, so a few simple changes can make a real difference.
Keep the sunshine outside! 🫠
During the hottest part of the day, close your curtains or blinds on windows that receive direct sunlight. It may seem strange when the sun finally decides to appear, but it helps stop rooms from heating up like a greenhouse .

Open windows at the right time - Rather than leaving windows open all day, try opening them early in the morning and later in the evening when the outside air is cooler. If you can create a gentle breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of the property, even better.

🚰 Stay hydrated 🚰
Keep a bottle of cold water nearby and remember to drink regularly. A walk up Arthur's Seat or around The Meadows is much more enjoyable when you're properly hydrated!

Give appliances a break - Dishwashers, tumble dryers and ovens all generate extra heat. If possible, use them later in the evening when temperatures have dropped.

A few small changes can make your home much more comfortable while making the most of Scotland's rare summer sunshine. πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸŒžπŸ€™
