A garden bench built from eucalyptus wood. The arts and crafts style is a fusion of the client's ideas with features from our in house bench seat style .It was influenced by the quantity and quality of the timber available from a windfall tree recovered from Inverewe Gardens many years ago.
We are very happy to talk to prospective clients wishing to maximise their enjoyment of this beautiful part of the Highlands through commissioning the highest quality of garden furniture or perhaps looking for an extra special memorial bench.

Last week we delivered this garden bench built from eucalyptus which we acquired from a source in Moray. Believed to have been grown in Inverewe Gardens and felled many years ago the timber came to us via the stock of a now retired furniture maker from Dingwall.

The client specified the low back and a construction method devoid of metal fixings. Glue is deployed only on the dowels that retain the back and seat slats. Strength and longevity is provided by the design and quality of the joints. For example, the component parts of the end plates are connected by deep mortice and tenon joints held together using "square peg round hole" pins.

Eucalyptus is a dense and oily timber suited to an outdoor application such as this. We have sufficient stock to make at least two more long benches in this timber. As an alternative we have ample supplies of green oak, locally sourced and also ideal for out door furniture.

We have time slots available for building new projects in the spring so if you are thinking of acquiring attractive bespoke and high quality garden furniture for next summer season please do get in touch.

ANTI - VIRUS MEASURES

Dear friends and customers,

please note that whilst as a self employed and almost totally isolated worker, I may or may not be in the Pier Road workshop from time to time, it will be closed to the public with immediate effect and until further notice.

However, if you do find yourself with time on your hands and turn your thoughts towards commissioning that piece of furniture you have always wanted, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email and I will be very happy to talk about projects and work up plans during this enforced shut down.

Stay safe, follow the advice from the authorities and don't take unnecessary risks, there will be an end to all this!

My very best wishes to you all in these times without recent precedent.

Sandy Boyd

A long bespoke breakfast bar built to fit in the client's sun room, which has excellent all round views of Gairloch and the Torridon hills. Solid timber frame with ply panels for the base and beautiful 2-inch thick elm top and brackets. The elm came to me from Flowerdale Estate in Gairloch via Stuart Macleod's saw mill at Lochcarron. There is some fantastic green/ blue shading in this piece of wood. Elm is so dramatic, thank goodness for the Grampians and the windy weather here in the Highlands which combine to protect our elm trees from the ravishes of Dutch Elm disease, apparently carried by a beetle that cannot cope with these conditions.

We don't suffer from a lack of variety here at Wester Ross Woodwork! These pictures are of another job delivered this week (what two jobs finished in the same week? - there is a first!). The shelf and brackets are made from spalted elm with the front edge being kept "semi" live. Constructed from two inch thick boards and finished with tough lacquer it should cope with the rigors of the shower room.

Big six leaf dinning table re finished for a local shooting lodge. I really need to learn to take better photos of polished surfaces but hopefully you can pick up the beauty of that solid flame mahogany. This was a dead line job that gave me some heart ache last weekend but these photos of it back in situ were taken on Monday evening, leaving just shy of 24hrs before the big dinner party. Hopefully nothing was spilled on it!

A kitchen all in sycamore that we built last summer. The client wanted everything as light as possible as the kitchen is to the north side of the house. The tall larder unit is all bespoke woodwork of our own design and build. In this instance the smaller cabinets were built around standard kitchen base and wall units, but every thing you can see the photographs, including the work tops, is bespoke woodwork using Highland timber sourced from Cromartie Timber at Strathpeffer.
