When you can see the roof joists through the roof covering..... its probably time for a new roof!!!

It's always sad to see a property fall into this level of disrepair but sometimes it's just not possible for occupants to act on necessary repairs due to cost. Unfortunately, this just ends up costing more as the property deteriotes further! 😔

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year's theme is nature. ⁠As surveyors, we're fortunate that we get to spend a lot of our time outdoors doing our job. Come rain, wind or shine. You will always find a surveyor out on site. We caught up with David Straughan, Director of Eriss⁠, on why getting outside is important to him.⁠

"Lockdown has definitely tested my mental health. Having had a run-in with my own mental health a few years ago, whenever I find myself slipping into a bad mood or getting anxious about a situation, I have always found that being outside helps clear my mind. Whether I'm out for a run along the quayside or simply standing at my front door with a cup of tea, that moment of being in the fresh air helps to clear my mind and focus on the here and now. It helps to ground me and it helps me to see what is important and what is not worth giving headspace.

Usually, that problem that has been growing arms and legs will be put into perspective. I realise it's either not as bad as I have been building it up to be, or it is not something worth worrying about as I can't do anything about it anyway.

You don't get that perspective when you're sat in front of your screen all day because there is always something else to do"

So, remember to take that time for yourself and go outside, clear your mind and see how connecting with nature can help your own mental health.

When you're trying to diagnose a problem, sometimes inspections are limited from the surface. Sometimes the only way to get to the bottom of the problem is through destructive investigation.

What an amazing sunset on the Tyne! It looks like the sky is on fire!

Hopefully there is some truth in the saying "red sky at night, shepherds delight" and we'll have some great weather for tomorrow's surveys.

During an inspection this morning we noted Japanese Knotweed growing through the external wall of a property. It has also spread below the concrete yard where it is starting to grow between the boundary wall.

The repairs for this will be significant and it will require extensive treatment of the ground and structure.
