Some of the most important work on a property project happens before anyone sets foot on site. Before any work could begin on site at Listed Building, Cadogan Place, we needed to understand exactly how the building fitted together.

With multiple floors, staircases and changes in level between the front of the property and the building behind it, this was no straightforward conversion.

Our architectural team created a detailed sectional model of the entire building, allowing us to work through the complexities, identify potential challenges and coordinate the design before construction began.

It’s a good example of just how much work goes on behind the scenes of a successful property transformation, long before the builders arrive!

Take a look at the full case study to see how we approached this complex project. 👇

A long career deserves a proper send-off, and last week the team got together for a few drinks at Cristi's Bar to wish both Chris Stewart, CEO of our sister company Mass & Co, and Sue Stewart, who headed up the MS2 Property Management arm of the business, a very happy retirement. 🥂

Chris took the helm at Mass & Co in 2013, having already been a key part of the business since 1992, with Sue running the Property Management side of Mass & Co, MS2. For more than three decades, their experience, knowledge and leadership have played an important part in establishing Mass & Co as one of the leading firms of Chartered Surveyors, Commercial Property Agencies and Property Management companies in the local area.

Mass & Co became part of the Howe Chartered Surveyors group in April 2025, and we’re proud to continue the reputation for property expertise that Chris and Sue have helped to build over so many years.

From all of us at Howe Chartered Surveyors, we wish both Chris and Sue a very happy and well-earned retirement – with plenty of time to relax together and, hopefully, no more crawling around in lofts!

With the energy price cap rising again, there’s understandably plenty of talk about using less energy. But what about the energy your property is wasting before you’ve even had the chance to use it?

As today is Energy Efficiency Day, it might be worth looking at your home a little differently and thinking about where the energy is going before you've even reached for the thermostat.

For example:

🏠 Is one room noticeably colder than the others?

🪟 Does that lovely big window or older extension make a room difficult to keep warm?

🌡️ Are you heating spaces that you barely use?

🔨 Have previous alterations left parts of the property performing differently from others?

💨 And are there areas where heat simply seems to disappear?

Energy efficiency isn't always about remembering to switch things off, although of course that's important too; sometimes it's about understanding how the building itself is performing.

With colder weather on the way, now is a good time to notice those little clues your property gives you, and think about whether maintenance, improvements or future refurbishment work could help it perform better.

Our Thermal Imaging Surveys can help you to understand your property further still, and will allow you to truly understand where energy is being lost. Get in touch to find out Howe we can help you to keep your home warm this winter:

Today is World Architecture Day, and as such we felt that it was a great chance to celebrate the role that thoughtful architecture plays in making our homes, workplaces and the wider built environment better.

Good architecture is always about much more than just attractive drawings. It’s about understanding what’s possible, navigating planning and Building Regulations, and making sure a great idea can actually become a great space.

From extending or renovating a home and breathing new life into an older building, to refurbishing commercial premises or planning a new development, HCS Architecture & Interiors can help, right from the early idea stage through to technical design and delivery.

October has arrived, and with it comes a change of season not just for people, but for our properties too. 🍂 For some, that means pumpkins on the doorstep, an autumn wreath on the door and perhaps a cosy throw and the odd candle or three! 🎃 For us, it also means thinking about what’s going on behind the decorations!

Autumn is a good time to give your property a little attention before the colder, wetter weather really sets in. Roofs, gutters, external areas and those small maintenance issues that were easy to overlook during summer are all worth checking now.

It can also be a good time to think about bigger plans: an extension or renovation at home, a commercial refurbishment, planned maintenance, a change of premises or a property move before the year is out.

From building surveys and maintenance advice to architectural design, project management and commercial property agency, there are plenty of ways our team can help this autumn.

So, why don't you take care of the pumpkins, and we’ll help you take care of the property? 🎃🏠 Happy October, all!

It’s amazing what can be done with the right space.

We recently shared a before-and-after transformation of this former convenience store on Billericay High Street into Cristi's Bar . Having received plenty more photos of the finished space, we thought it deserved another look.

It’s a great example of the potential that can sit behind an existing shopfront. A commercial property might not be exactly what you need when you first walk through the door. The layout might need rethinking, the interior could need completely stripping back, or you may be considering a use that’s very different from what was there before.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t the right space.

Whether you’re looking for premises for a new business, considering a move or wondering what could be done with a property you already own, it pays to look beyond what’s there now and think about what it could become.

At Howe Chartered Surveyors, our Commercial Agency team can help you look at the opportunities available and, where needed, draw on our wider surveying and architectural expertise to help turn ideas into something that works.

Just take a look through these finished photos for a little inspiration… 👇

It might not quite be heating season just yet…but it won’t be long! 🍂 With the mornings getting cooler and the evenings drawing in, many of us will soon be reaching for the thermostat for the first time in months over the coming weeks.

From a property maintenance point of view, now is a good time to make sure everything is ready. A reliable heating system doesn't just keep the building comfortable; maintaining a reasonable temperature and good ventilation can also help manage condensation and reduce the risk of damp and mould as the weather gets colder.

It’s worth turning the heating on for a short test before you really need it, checking that radiators are warming evenly and keeping an eye out for leaks, unusual noises or anything else that doesn’t seem quite right.

The change of season is also a useful reminder to look at the wider property. Blocked gutters, damaged roof coverings, draughty windows or poorly maintained external areas can all become more noticeable once autumn rain and colder temperatures arrive.

As with most things in property maintenance, spotting a small issue early is generally far better than discovering it after a winter of wind, rain and freezing temperatures and once the problem becomes a big deal.

So, before the heating goes back on properly, it might be worth giving your property a quick autumn health check... 🔥

When working on property projects, there are often little details that both delight and surprise us. For example, if you strip back the plaster, an old London building is often a kind of palimpsest: chimney breasts, brickwork and alterations layered up over centuries, all still there under the surface.

This is what was behind the walls at Cadogan Place while we worked, held together with a little quiet steelwork until it was ready to close back up again.

It's always interesting what's hidden underneath, and a reminder that things shouldn't be taken at face value. Read more about our work at Cadogan Place in our latest case study:

Another week, another HCS team game…and this time it was a version of Tiddlywinks! 😄

The aim was simple: we had to 'tiddle our winks' into the grid, getting one counter into every box in the quickest possible time.

There was a catch, though. Only one player could go at a time and every member of the team had to take their turn, so a little teamwork was required alongside some surprisingly serious tiddlywinks skills!

A bit of friendly competition, some questionable technique and, eventually we came out with a winning team! But who is on track to take the trophy for the year? That is the big question now! 🏆
