Christmas cheer for some leaseholders this week, because at least one home building firm is retreating from the practice of doubling ground rents every 10 years.

The clause they had inserted into their contracts meant that whilst new build buyers owned their properties, the ground the homes stood on were rented from the home builder. And the rent was set to double, and double again, every decade!

This meant misery for some home buyers who were unable to sell their homes or get mortgages.

It shows the vital importance of strong legal advice when buying a new build, so that you know what you're getting into.
