🏰 Visiting 30 Castles in Northumberland 🏰

Did you know Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England? We tried to visit them all in 2023.

Apparently we have over 70 to choose from 😱 Although Wikipedia lists 48.

After going through the list, I have put together a list of the 30 most viable Castles to visit as I don't think it's wise for me to visit / promote visiting the castles which are a private residence/cannot be viewed without entering private property and personally, I don't want to visit castles that are just a lump in the ground as this is too boring 😅 .

Here's my list:

🏰Alnwick (entry fee applies - visit in Spring for daffodil display, opens March)
🏰Aydon (closed in winter, free for EH members, dog friendly - this may have changed now so do check )
🏰Bamburgh (entry fee applies, dogs welcome in grounds)
🏰Bellister Castle (can view exterior only from nearby walks, dog friendly)
🏰Belsay (visit in Spring for flowers, dog friendly in grounds, free for EH members)
🏰Berwick (free entry)
🏰Blenkinsopp Castle (free ruin, dog friendly)
🏰Cartington Castle (free ruin, dog friendly)
🏰Chillingham (entry fee applies, visit in October for ghosts 👻)
🏰Chipchase Castle (only open for a few dates in summer)
🏰Cresswell (open on selected dates - visit when staying at caravan)
🏰Dilston Castle (free ruin, dog friendly)
🏰Dunstanburgh (dog friendly, free for EH/NT members)
🏰Edlingham (free ruin, dog friendly)
🏰Etal (free ruin, dog friendly. Can view 🏰Ford Castle from the outside as part of the same trip)
🏰Featherstone (private castle used for events but you can enjoy a walk nearby)
🏰Harbottle Castle (free ruin, dog friendly, combine with drake stone)
🏰Kielder (free)
🏰Langley Castle (bar/restaurant/accommodation)
🏰Lindisfarne (opens 13 March. Free for NT members)
🏰Mitford Castle (free ruin, dog friendly, can only be viewed from outside. Combine with walk from Morpeth Castle?)
🏰Morpeth Castle (holiday accommodation)
🏰Norham (free, dog friendly)
🏰Otterburn Castle (hotel/restaurant/bar)
🏰Ponteland Castle (the Blackbird Pub)
🏰Prudhoe (opens 1 April, dog friendly, free for EH members)
🏰Rothley Castle (free ruin, dog friendly)
🏰Thirlwell Castle (free ruin, dog friendly, complete the castle walk)
🏰 Twizell Castle (free ruin , dog friendly)
🏰Warkworth (dog friendly, free for EH members, visit in Spring for daff display)

Please note, I put this list together in 2023 and some of the Castle opening times / entry methods may have changed so do check direct before visiting.

Featherstone Castle has that proper Border Reiver feel about it - the sort of place that looks like it was built to last through bad weather and worse neighbours. Sitting above the River South Tyne just outside Haltwhistle, it’s one of those buildings that still carries a bit of “don’t mess about” in its bones.

What you’re looking at is a castle that’s been reinvented over centuries. There are medieval roots here - including an early hall-house thought to date back to the 1200s, plus a defensive tower from the early 1300s - then later tweaks in the 1600s. The big transformation came in the early 1800s, when it was remodelled into the castellated, Tudor-Gothic country house look it wears so well now.

It’s a cracking reminder that Northumberland doesn’t really do “dainty” - even the grand homes look like they’re ready to hold the line.
