Work on this new £10-million student accommodation for Trinity College, in Cambridge, began in 2018, completing in 2021. This 45-bedroom graduate student accommodation scheme is located in the world-renowned Cambridge Union Society, on Round Church Street.
Morgan Sindall Construction worked alongside a team of archaeologists due to the site being located on part of Cambridge’s Medieval defence system, The Kings Ditch - believed to date back to the Saxon era.
BB&C Architects took style references from the adjacent Waterhouse designed Victorian Cambridge Union Society and together with the refurbishment proposals for the neighbouring section of the Union replacing the tired and mismatched mix of Victorian, 1930s and 1960s architecture with a unified sympathetic modern interpretation. Sussex Handmade Brick’s Guestling Red, Hastings Dark Red and Westfield bricks were selected to best achieve this look, complimenting both the modern and historical parts of the building.

This recently completed private property was built using a blend of Hastings Light, Hastings Medium and Hasting Dark bricks. Additional plinth bricks was used to create a subtle detail along the lower level of the property. To compliment the brick work our sister company William Blyth supplied a range of handmade sanded clay roof tiles and chimney pots for the stacks on the property. All in keeping with the overall design or the property as well as the colour tones requested by the client. Please get in touch to discuss your individual requirements and to request samples of both bricks and roof tiles!

Dated in the early 1900s the Berry machine has the ability to make a range of metric and imperial size facing bricks with a very smooth almost washed texture with little to no creasing marks.

Made by part hand and machine the clay is compressed into the traditional wooden moulds were they are then moulded and carefully placed onto trays to where they stay on racking to dry before going to the kiln.

Our Berry made bricks formally known as our Beckley range are available in three shades of colour, Orange, Red and Dark Red. Please get in touch for samples and to discuss your project!

Established in 1896 we are one of the few remaining true handmade brick works that has survived a transition within the UK brick industry.

Whilst investing some of the latest technology to remain efficient and economical we have maintained the essence of what makes our bricks truly unique. Keeping handmaking skills alive as well as producing the Beckley brick, which is made using a traditional Berry machine dating as far back as the early 1900s.

Our bricks have always been in demand and we are truly honoured to have worked on some of the most prestigious buildings in the UK.

We are Sussex Handmade Brick .

King Edward VII Estate, West Sussex

Originally built in 1901 as a hospital, with many extensions made during its time, some being designed in a sensitive manner and others with the practicalities of a hospital being the overriding factor. The hospital closed its doors in 2006. After standing derelict for three years, City & Country painstakingly and sympathetically restored the buildings removing all unsightly interventions back to their former glory. After previously assisting with several of City & Country’s projects, Sussex Handmade Brick Limited were approached again to supply them with our range of handmade bricks in Guestling Red and Waverley Orange to restore and renovate the existing period buildings onsite, as well as incorporating a portion of new build properties to the site. Winning many awards including Sussex Heritage Awards 2023 winner, Evening Standard New Home Award 2023 for best conversion, and 2022 Whathouse? Bronze award.
