Hardknott Pass, with a glimpse of the old Roman fort, is certainly a road that demands respect. It’s steep, narrow and unforgiving, though there will always be those who insist it’s easy and that anyone who finds it challenging simply isn’t up to their supposed standard.

For me, the most unnerving part is the climb itself. As you wind your way upwards, the hillside seems to rise before you until, for a moment, the road simply disappears beneath the bonnet. All you can see is the slope ahead, and it feels as though you’re driving straight into the mountain, trusting the road to reappear somewhere beyond the crest.

It’s one of those roads where the landscape is every bit as dramatic as the challenge of driving it.

You can see from this photo just how dramatically situated this fort is. One of the highest and most remote Roman forts in England, it was built in the 2nd century AD to guard the route through the mountains, which followed a similar route through the pass as the modern road seen on the right. This road connected Roman settlements at Ambleside and Ravenglass, with Hardknott located roughly halfway between them (map in comments).

The Roman name for the fort was Mediobogdum, and it was built and garrisoned by the Fourth Cohort of Dalmatians from modern Croatia and Montenegro. The arrow in the photo points to a flat piece of land that was probably the parade ground. The soldiers moved an estimated 5,000 cubic metres of stone and earth to create the parade ground on what is otherwise rough, uneven ground.

The fort seems to have been abandoned in the same century it was built, possibly within a few decades.
