Meadowside Cottage was originally built as two flats, with the front door leading to the lower rooms and the back door opening to stairs to the upper floor.
The cottage had no running water then ā instead, water was collected from a stand pipe across the road. How different daily life in the village must once have been.
Itās lovely to imagine the generations who have called this corner of Allenheads home over the years. Boots drying by the fire, neighbours stopping to chat in the lane, and the rhythm of life shaped by the seasons and the lead mines that once dominated the valley.
There are still many reminders of Allenheadsā mining history throughout the village. Upstairs in the Blacksmithās Shop thereās a fascinating display about the areaās geology and mining past, while the Armstrong hydraulic engine still stands proudly in the centre of the village.
The low circular wall near the crossroads marks the Gin Hill Shaft, one of several entrances to Allenheads Mine, while beyond the car park opposite the pub a display board tells the story of the old dressing floors and bousesteads that once formed part of this industrious landscape.
Today the village is quieter, but thereās still a timeless feeling here š
