📌 FLOORING Q&A #14
Can Microcement be applied over an existing floor?

One of the reasons microcement can be attractive for renovation projects is that it can potentially be installed over an existing surface, avoiding the need to completely remove the original floor.
But not every existing floor is suitable.
Before considering the finish, the existing substrate needs to be assessed. It should be stable and sound, with no significant movement or loose areas. Cracks, damaged areas, unevenness and other substrate issues may need to be dealt with first.
The preparation will also depend on what is already there — whether that's tiles, concrete, screed or another suitable surface.
This is where good installation practice really matters.
Microcement is a thin finish. It isn't there to correct problems with the floor beneath it.
Get the substrate right first and you're giving the finished surface the best possible foundation.
For an architect, designer or self-builder planning a renovation, the question isn't just “Can microcement go over my existing floor?”
It's “Is my existing floor suitable, and what preparation does it need?”
That's the question worth asking before specifying the finish.

📌 FLOORING Q&A -13 Is Microcement waterproof?
Microcement can be used successfully in areas exposed to water, including bathrooms, shower areas and wet rooms.
However, it is important to understand that microcement itself should not simply be treated as a waterproofing system.
The performance comes from the complete system — including the substrate, preparation, application, detailing and the correct protective sealer.
Wet areas also require careful attention to corners, joints, penetrations and areas around showers and other water sources.
So the better question isn't simply:
“Is microcement waterproof?”
It's:
“Has the complete system been correctly specified and installed for the environment?”
For architects, interior designers and self-builders, this is an important distinction when considering microcement for a project.

📌 FLOORING Q&A #12 Why does Cemfloor need to be ground?
If Cemfloor is specified to become a polished finished floor, it needs to be ground as part of the process.
The paste on the surface of the screed is not designed to be the durable wearing layer. The aggregate within the Cemfloor provides the hardness and durability needed for the finished surface.
Grinding removes the surface paste and exposes the aggregate beneath. The floor can then be refined and polished through the appropriate stages to achieve the required finish.
The final appearance will depend on factors such as the screed itself, aggregate exposure, grinding depth, diamond tooling and the level of refinement required.
Grinding is therefore not simply preparation for polishing — it is an essential part of creating the finished wearing surface.
This is particularly important when Cemfloor is being considered by architects, interior designers and self-builders. The finished-floor requirements need to be considered when specifying the system, rather than deciding to polish it as an afterthought.

📌 FLOORING Q&A-11 Can Cemfloor be polished?

Yes — Cemfloor can be polished to produce a smooth, refined and durable finished floor.
However, achieving the right result involves much more than simply polishing the surface.
The Cemfloor needs to be correctly installed, cured and prepared before the polishing process begins. The final appearance will depend on the condition of the floor, the system specification and the level of refinement required.
Getting the process right from the beginning is key to achieving a quality finished floor.
For architects, interior designers and self-builders, it's worth considering the finished flooring requirements during the design and specification stage.

📌 FLOORING Q&A #10
What's the difference between a honed and polished concrete floor?
Both are mechanically finished concrete surfaces, but the key difference is the level of refinement and the appearance achieved.
A honed concrete floor is ground to create a smooth, refined surface, generally with a more natural and lower-sheen appearance.
A polished concrete floor goes through additional stages of diamond refinement to produce a smoother, denser and potentially more reflective finish.
It's worth remembering that honed doesn't mean unfinished, and polished doesn't automatically mean a highly glossy floor.
There are different levels of refinement and sheen, so the desired appearance should be discussed and specified before the work begins.
For architects, interior designers and self-builders, understanding these differences helps ensure the flooring finish matches the overall design.

This is where all the previous stages come together.
In Parts 01 and 02, we followed the floor from planning and preparation through the concrete pour, levelling, colour application and power floating.
Now the concrete has cured and we're ready for the final stages.
This particular floor was completed as an HTC Superfloor Bronze.
The surface is opened up to allow the densifier to pe*****te, then progressively refined and polished before being sealed.
The client requested a high finish, so the polishing process was taken through to achieve the appearance they wanted.
It's worth remembering that polished concrete isn't simply about putting a machine over a floor and making it shiny.
The final result comes from every decision and process that has gone before it.
The Flooring Process — Part 03
Refining • Polishing • Sealing
That's the completed floor — from the first preparation to the final finish.

📌 FLOORING Q&A #09
Can you see the aggregate in a polished concrete floor?
Yes — and the amount of aggregate you see is largely influenced by how deeply the concrete is ground.
Aggregate is the stone within the concrete mix. A lighter grind may expose very little, while deeper grinding can reveal much more of the aggregate beneath the surface.
The size, colour and distribution of the aggregate will also influence the character of the finished floor.
This is one of the things that makes polished concrete so distinctive. Rather than simply applying a finish over the top, the polishing process can reveal the materials that are already within the concrete.
The result can range from subtle to highly exposed and dramatic.

🎥 CEMENTALL FLOORING PROCESS — 02
What actually goes into producing a finished floor?
The finished surface is only part of the story.
Preparation, laying, levels, finishing and attention to detail all contribute to the final result.
Here's another look behind the scenes at the Cementall flooring process.
We believe the quality of the finished floor starts with getting the process right from the beginning.

📌 FLOORING Q&A #08
Does polished concrete feel cold underfoot?
It can — but that doesn't mean polished concrete is necessarily a cold flooring choice.
Concrete has excellent thermal mass, allowing it to absorb heat and release it gradually. This makes polished concrete particularly interesting for spaces with underfloor heating.
Without heating, concrete will generally feel cooler underfoot than materials such as carpet or timber, especially during colder periods.
This is why the heating system and the complete floor build-up should be considered alongside the finished floor during the design stage.
Good flooring design is about more than just the surface you see.

📌 FLOORING Q&A #07
What actually gives polished concrete its unique appearance?
The answer is simple: the concrete itself.
Polished concrete isn't a decorative coating applied over the surface. The concrete is mechanically ground and polished to reveal and enhance the material beneath.
The final appearance can be influenced by the aggregate, cement colour, mix design, grinding depth and level of refinement.
This is why polished concrete can have so much character — the materials within the concrete become part of the finished floor.
The beauty is in the material, not simply on it.
For a new build or renovation, these decisions are worth considering early, particularly when the floor is intended to be an important part of the overall design.
