Where architecture meets the wild... 🌲

This stunning aerial shot captures one of our current projects in its natural setting, nestled deep in the Devon countryside and surrounded by woodland, a winding river, and rolling pasture. Drone photography like this reveals just how much thought goes into designing with the landscape, not against it.

Our sites often sit within a rich mosaic of habitats: mature woodland, riparian corridors (a strip of land and its vegetation that runs along the banks of a river, stream, or other watercourse!), and open meadow - all areas that support local wildlife and biodiversity. We're proud to work closely with ecologists throughout the design process to make sure every project respects and enhances its surroundings.

Welcome to our first mini-series, "What we've been up to" - let's call it a catch up, seeing as we've been MIA for a little while.

We've been leading the careful renovation of this stunning Barton farmhouse in North Devon, from the early strategy and listed building consent, right through to construction on site.

It's been a real privilege to work with the custodians of the property, as they invest in the future of this beautiful (and rather complex!) historic building.

The project involves unpicking some misguided 20th century alterations, sensitively repairing and strengthening the historic fabric, and introducing energy efficient heating to create a warm, dry and comfortable home for their retirement.

Working closely with South West Archaeology Ltd and Torridge District Council's Conservation Officer, we secured planning and listed building consent before tendering the works and bringing together a team of skilled tradespeople and craftspeople. Construction is now well underway, led on site by the main contractor, The Veale Brothers.

We're continuing to guide the project as Project Managers, Lead Designers and Contract Administrators, giving our clients continuity from design through to construction - and importantly, keeping all the moving parts on track!

And, as with any old building, the more we uncover, the more interesting the story becomes. The works are revealing a building whose evolution is far more complex than its official listing suggests.

It's exactly the kind of project we love - thoughtful design, conservation, skilled craftsmanship and a great team of people working together to give an old building a new lease of life.

Community is at the heart of what we do here at Piper Architecture, and we love supporting local businesses both in and out of work.

Our directors, Hannah and Lyndon, visited Farm's annual Tomato Festival on Sunday, enjoying a wonderful four-course meal prepared by the exceptionally talented Mariana and Al using produce grown on the farm.

It was so inspiring to see the abundance that can be produced from a relatively small area of land! Trigon Farm is a true celebration of regenerative farming and a more thoughtful relationship with the natural world.

A lovely afternoon reconnecting with nature (they were even treated to the sight of a hummingbird hawk-moth feeding on the verbena), the land and the origins of good food – and a timely reminder that the best designs begin with an understanding of the elements, the landscape and the nature around us.

Last week, we hosted a work experience student who was keen to explore the world of architecture! Jaxon was an absolute pleasure to have as part of the team - and we were blown away by his technical skills!

Jaxon had already designed his dream home in a video game, so his challenge for the week was to draw it up in our architectural software. He picked it up incredibly well and produced some brilliant drawings.

These are Jaxon's concept design floor plans. He also managed to create some 3D drawings, which we'll share soon!

As well as learning the drawing side of things, Jaxon had a full overview of our process from start to finish, had a go at using our Leica survey instrument, learned about different types of planning applications and experienced working in an office environment for the first time.

Several things to note here:

1) We are in the new office! There are still a few tweaks here and there but we are nicely settled in and loving our new surroundings.

2) The internal temperature seems to either be the same, or lower, than the outside air temperature.....and despite it being almost the middle of June, we are lighting the log burner on a regular basis to keep us nice and warm! On one hand, we love it, on the other hand, why are we doing this in June 😂

3) Office doggo has taken up residence in the prime spot. And not enjoying having her photo taken - doing her very best to look everywhere except the camera!
