Before & After | Corner Garden Play Area + Roofed Arbour

This 7x7m patch of garden was transformed into a kids' play area with a custom roofed arbour seat — all on a very tight budget.

The ground was rotovated, levelled, and framed with a sleeper border joined with half-lap joints for strength. In the corner, I designed and built a bespoke timber arbour using reclaimed timber for the frame and cost-effective featheredge for the sides and roof — shaped carefully to fit three angled fence lines.

The seat was finished in exterior oil, and the rest treated with fencing oil for protection. The client was delighted — and I’ll be back soon to help with more garden work.

🏡 BEFORE & AFTER — Conservatory Roof Insulation

The original conservatory roof was noisy in the rain, freezing in winter, and boiling in summer — we fixed that without breaking the bank.

I used multi-layer reflective insulation (SuperQuilt) and built a solid timber frame to strengthen the roof and provide a good base for the plaster boards. The plasterboarding was tricky but was a rewarding plastering job (tight corners and all!). We sealed up draughts, improved the wiring, and upgraded the lights for a modern, cosy finish.

Now the space feels like a proper room — bright, warm, and usable all year round.

🛠️Custom Timber Shed Build 🛠️

This shed was built to be solid, unique, and long-lasting. Using locally sawn pine in varying widths, we framed it with 4x2 timber (ready for future insulation), and fitted the boards from thickest to thinnest for a distinctive look.

We cleverly built the door into the cladding, then cut it free so it blends in seamlessly when shut. The roof is thick 18mm ply, sealed with torch-on felt for a proper, lasting finish.

Built to last, and made to look like it’s always been there — I loved this one.

🔨 BEFORE & AFTER — Full Fence Replacement 🔨

The old fence was tired and full of holes which was not ideal for the owners who were soon welcoming a rescue dog and needed a secure perimeter.

We dug out old steel posts, concreted in new timber ones (treated for extra life), fitted the panels with stainless nails to avoid future rust stains, and finished it all with two coats of fencing oil. Now it’s solid, secure and looks totally at home in the space.

Patio Makeover
The old patio was in bad shape, with mismatched slabs and a cracked feature. I repurposed Brazilian black slate from a local mansion’s swimming pool, cleaned it up, and laid it on a solid foundation. The result? A stylish, high-end look for a fraction of the price.

This bathroom was transformed without the high costs. I kept the original bath, toilet, and sink, but retiled the walls and floor, added a power shower, glass divider, and replaced the mirror and radiator. A practical, stylish update, all while staying within budget.

Driveway Overhaul!

What started as an overgrown garden with trees, rubble, and an old water feature turned into a solid, functional driveway. After clearing tons of debris, we laid new paving with a neat border and added a flower bed for a touch of green. 4 years on, it’s still going strong!
