Our house was in the property section of the Scotsman on Thursday the 11th May. Check it out. It has also been featured in the Times property section, the Sunday Post and East Lothian Life. Hope that someone decides to buy it soon - such a unique home in a beautiful Arts & Craft hamlet on the edge of Humbie - a lovely rural village in East Lothian.

Sharing this short film found on youtube taken last year to provide a driver's view of Shillinghill and the position of our house on the hill. It was a very wet and dreich day. I was totally surprised to see, about a minute in, Jim(hubby) and Robbie(son) heading down the hill with a shovel to clear surface water on the bottom road.

A little bit on the history of our home.

This pleasant looking woman is Katharine Marjory Stewart-Murray (née Ramsey), Duchess of Atholl (1874-1960), Public servant; wife of 8th Duke of Atholl; daughter of Sir James Henry Ramsay.

On the 23rd of February 1924, She officially opened the Children's Recreation Hall (now our home) with a golden key. She spoke of her friendship for the late Mr Rough from Walkerburn, in whose memory the hall was built.

A peal of bells greeted Lady Murray's declaration, that the hall was open with the Westminster chimes ringing out from the belfry ( bells are still here and can deliver the Westminster chimes)

Carrying out further research on Lady Murray is fascinating. She was a Public servant; often remembered as 'the Red Duchess' , in 1923 she became the first woman member from Scotland elected to the House of Commons. As a self-proclaimed crusader against international cruelty, she visited Spain and became actively involved in the care of Republican refugees. Her open criticism of the Conservative government's toleration of Franco cost her her position as party whip.

At the event, which was presided by Lady Polwarth were three doctors from the League of Natins, Dr I.P. Agostini from Havana, Cuba; Professor Alexandre Wladimiroff from Moscow and Doctor Holz, Graz from Austria who expressed great interest in the village and the open-air school.
