The Bridge Street area of Inverness was originally reconstructed during the late 1950s and early 1960s. At that time, the old Ness Suspension Bridge and buildings on both sides of Bridge Street were demolished and replaced with concrete structures. The building on the corner of Bridge Street and Bank Street was the headquarters of the Highlands and Islands Development Board (HIDB). This was given a facelift in the 2000s, and the new 'By the Bridge' complex now houses luxury apartments with views of Inverness Castle and the River Ness. Further along Bank Street, on the left of the photograph, the spires of St Columba's High Church, the Free North Church, and the Old High Church can be seen.
