We renovated the house over 2 years using a local conservation architect and were delighted to win an award as a result. The thriving village of Staveley is a short drive (or 70 minute walk) away, where there are shops, the Hawkshead brewery, and the rather good Eagle & Child pub. The Lake District towns of Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside are close at hand. And from the doorstep are numerous walks in the Kentmere valley to suit every level of ambition. Nigella has opined (in the Financial Times no less) on the perils and excitement of holiday let kitchens. We were feeling quite good - we have copious knives and pots, a choice of tin openers, our ovens do seem to set to correct temperature, we have a mandoline…. but oh the shame we didn’t have a garlic peeling tube. Now rectified. Happy cooking guests!

Two pairs of Barn Swallows nesting in our shed. Lovely to see the swooping in and out, and later in the video a Wagtail visitor. This summer we’ve also see or heard Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Meadow Pipit, Buzzard, Wren, Robin, Dunnock, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Siskin, Pheasant, and House Martin. (Aided by the excellent Merlin bird call spotter app).
