Yesterday we went for a hike, in the rain, up to castle crag in borrowdale. It’s one of our favourite walking routes in the Lake District and will try to do a full video guide in the future. But as we walked up the rain eased a little, we stopped and looked across to watch the sun break through the clouds. We all just stood and soaked in the beautiful view in front of us.

Yes it rains in the Lake District, but that’s what makes it so beautiful, the contrast and life the wet was brings. If you don’t like the liquid sun, then go to Benidorm. And if you don’t like people that moan about rain then come to the Lake District. It’s why we’re happier people up here.

With the kids back at school we’ve enjoyed getting adventurous for a couple of hours a day. Today we broke through the intermittent showers and went to one of our favourite wild swimming spots in the whole Lake District, Loweswater.

Alasdair took some drone shots, but we couldn’t decide which one to post. So we put up all three. Which one is your favourite?

We love autumn, it’s one of our favourite time of year in the Lake District. We just went for a walk up Barrow behind Braithwaite and captured a moody picture of the rain rolling in. However we used a bit of AI to turn it into a video.

The high fells are already in the turn, early this year. But there will be plenty of beauty come November when we still have some availability.

We’ve just got back from an amazing day exploring the sunken village of Mardale in the east of the Lake District, which got flooded in the 1930s to create Haweswater reservoir.

Every couple of years, after a long dry summer, like we’ve just had, remnants of this old world resurface. A lot of the houses were stripped and knocked down. However the lonnins (Cumbrian word for country lanes) and dry stone walls are still there to be walked along.

It was interesting finding the boundaries of old houses, even some old render of a house, particularly thinking many of the houses would have been the same as Low Nest.

It was also hard to explain to the girls that people just had to leave. There wasn’t a huge amount of say in the matter. That was the times. However we’ve still got UU on our field having had no say in them coming across it.

Normally this out of the way valley is very quiet. We expected it to be busy and while we were surprised how many cars there were there was plenty of considerate parking on the road and the actually dried lake was quite quiet. Just a note that it was VERY MUDDY!

We’ve got a bit of rain coming in now so it’ll only fill up now, but next September it could be just as dry.

We’ll do another reel tomorrow of the ground level adventure. But here is some drone footage rudimentarily clipped together with very little editing.

Keswick was so busy today that Molly and I decided to abandon our lake side walk and head to somewhere I knew we would have to ourselves. Can you guess where we went?

Where did you see the eclipse? We headed over to the Castlerigg stone circles (20 mins walk from Low Nest). There was an amazing chilled festival vibe going on, complete with a gong!

In typical cumbrian style a cloud came over bang on 7. But it soon cleared and we got that incredible cloud over the eclipse!

Today was a monumental day as we started the process of getting the highland cows in calf. The vet came over today to sync their cycles before we get an AI (the og AI) guy in next week.

Alasdair got inducted into the process by being 💩 on by one of the 🐄

All being well we should have baby highland cows next May/June. It’s often only 60% successful so there might only be one or two calves.

We actually have quite a few engagements a year with many asking advice for potential locations. If you were to get engaged in the Lakes, where would you want to be asked? Surprise view? Summit of Scafell Pike? Crow park? Booths car park?! Or just that view from Low Nest?!

Ever fancied taking on Sharp Edge on Blencathra? Possibly the Lake Districts best grade 1 scramble and when done right it’s a great day out for a fit walker.

Freya and Alasdair headed up there earlier this week. It was a major achievement for Freya who is really starting to get into climbing and bigger adventures. But for Alasdair it’s a regular haunt with his gallivanting antics with Keswick Mountain Rescue. Sharp Edge is not a place after it’s rained and even then It can be very dangerous. However, if you’re nervous then employ one of the many guide in the lakes who’ll take very good care of you!
