The Northern Estate ⛰️

Balnagown is a 39,000 acre Highland estate spread across Easter Ross and Sutherland.

The core estate is located on the east coast by Kildary, which is where most of our holiday properties are.

However, the estate stretches right across the country to within three miles of the west coast, taking in the majestic Ben More Assynt, the highest peak in Sutherland.

Here are some magical pictures our Estate Factor took on a recent jaunt up to the northern part of the estate.

This wonderful photo shows almost everyone who joined yesterday's walk around the stunning Balnagown Estate, gathered on King James's Bridge.

It was a fantastic event that helped raise valuable funds for our museum, and we would like to thank the St Duthac Book & Arts Festival for organising it, and Balnagown Estates for kindly allowing us the opportunity to explore their beautiful gardens and grounds.

Beauty in Balchraggan Woods

Our Factor spotted this stunning wild orchid in Balchraggan Woods (the Quarry) recently - what a joy to stumble across!

You can see orchids across the UK, flowering between April and September, with peak flowering season from May.

Please don’t pick them ~ orchids look their best out in the wild, and some species are legally protected so you could be breaking the law. But photos are OK! 📸

Small Blue Butterfly Conference 🦋

Over 80 people attended a day of walks, talks and tasty snacks organised by Butterfly Conservation Scotland Species on the Edge recently including visiting Balchraggan Wood on Balnagown Estate. The event was in honour of helping to save one of Scotland's fastest-declining butterflies ~ the Small Blue.

The aim of the conference was to bring together volunteers and provide an opportunity to share knowledge and experience. Attendees ate butterfly biscuits, picked up Small Blue tote bags and insect artworks, and topped it all off with the highlight of the day - seeing a single Small Blue!

On the estate this autumn we aim to remove some timber from the wood - and the stacking of this and movement of the forwarders and lorries will create further disturbance. This will help make space for kidney vetch (their sole foodplant) to grow, allowing us to help the Small Blues thrive in this area.
