Right. Sunday morning.

Someone asked me last week what the ideal Father's Day minibreak looks like from a practical point of view. And I started listing things — beach, pub, dog, fire — and then I stopped and thought about it properly.

The ideal thing is that moment on a Sunday morning when everyone is somewhere doing something and nobody needs you and the coast is still and the dog is asleep at your feet and the light on the salt marsh is doing something you can't really put words to.

And you think: we should come back here.

That's it. That's the whole thing. Everything else is just logistics.

We have the spot.

Saturday evening at the Holt woodland just now.

Last light through the trees at nine o'clock. Bats doing circuits over the lake. One of the shepherd hut guests has the fire pit going and I can just make out the glow from the other side of the field.

A kingfisher went past while I was checking the water. Which is the kind of thing that happens here on a Saturday evening as though it's perfectly normal. Because it is. That is the point.

If you have never fallen asleep to the sound of an owl rather than the sound of a road, you have been very patient with your life.

Stay over, make it a miniBreak.

Right. Eight days.

The shepherd hut on a Saturday morning in June looks something like this: light coming through the little window at about five thirty and doing something quite beautiful to the ceiling. The dog deciding that five thirty is entirely reasonable and beginning his shift. The fire you didn't quite put out last night still warm at the base.

Outside: fields. Quiet. Whatever weather Norfolk has decided to give you — and in June it is usually quite good.

If you are booking this as a Father's Day gift: it comes in at considerably less than whatever you'd spend on the thing he won't use. And the dog will also have a brilliant time.

Book your stay.

Samphire is coming up in the salt marsh now.

Every June I say the same thing: when the samphire's up, the season's properly started. There's something about that small bright green sea vegetable growing at the edge of the marsh that tells you everything about North Norfolk. Ancient, persistent, and absolutely delicious with butter.

Nine days to Father's Day. If the plan involves a shepherd hut, a fire pit and a morning walk past the samphire beds — that plan should probably be made today.

Availability is there. Nine days is enough.

Right. Nine days to Father's Day.

I want to talk about the Holt yurt.

It is in a woodland. There is a lake below it. There is a kingfisher. The kingfisher does not accept bookings — it just turns up when it wants, which is apparently the correct approach to life.

The yurt sits above the water, which means on a still morning you can hear it. Just water. Birds. A bit of breeze through the canopy. Nobody scheduling anything.

This is the gift for the man who has been indoors too long and doesn't know it yet. He will know it about two hours in.

Stay over, make it a miniBreak.

Right. Something happened at Wild Ken Hill this week that I genuinely cannot keep to myself.

The white stork fledglings are flying.

I know. I know that sounds like something from a nature documentary set somewhere else entirely. But there they are. Great white birds, circling over the rewilding estate that sits eight minutes from the Hunstanton pitches.

Wild Ken Hill has been going since 2019. Beavers, marsh harriers, barn owls, then the storks nested last year, and now — this week — the young ones are up.

The coast path runs straight from the Holme pitches into the estate. You walk out after breakfast and you're inside one of the most extraordinary rewilding projects in England.

I find it genuinely moving. I don't know how else to put it.

Stay over, make it a miniBreak.

Right. Father's Day is ten days away.

He has said he doesn't want anything. He has said this every year. Every year he is lying.

What he wants is a weekend where nobody needs him for anything. Where the only decision he has to make is whether to go to the beach or go to the pub first. Where the dog looks delighted and the kids are muddy and there is no Wi-Fi and it doesn't matter.

He wants to wake up in a shepherd hut in North Norfolk, UK with the woodburner cold and the birds already going at it and think: right, what day is it again.

That is what he wants.

Stay over, make it a miniBreak.
