Today, we held the Giroscope Origin Story 3 Lunch+ as part of the Giroscope40 Anniversary celebrations.
The final part of our trilogy looked towards the future: What’s next for neighbourhood renewal?

40 years. One big dinner. And not many tickets left.
On 24 September, St Matthew’s will be looking and sounding a little different.
We’re bringing together people who’ve been part of the Giroscope story over four decades for our 40th Anniversary Dinner: good food, familiar faces, a few stories, an auction, live music and, knowing us, probably one or two surprises along the way.
Keeping the evening moving will be our host, Lucy Thompson, former BBC Radio Humberside presenter and a familiar face at events across Hull and East Yorkshire.

Our band for the night is the Hillbilly Troupe, bringing their exceptional blend of folk, punk, ska and Americana.

Making sure they, and everyone else, can be properly seen and heard are another Hull organisation we’re very pleased to have alongside us: HPSS Ltd.

For more than 30 years, HPSS have been working behind the scenes at gigs, festivals, tours and major events, providing professional sound, lighting, staging and AV. For our anniversary night, they’ll be providing the PA, staging and lighting that will transform St Matthew’s for the evening.

Ted Tuthill-Jones from HPSS said:
“We're delighted to be able to help a fantastic local charity celebrate 40 years of their impactful work. It is always a pleasure to work alongside fellow Hull-based organisations, and Giroscope represents the very best of the city.”

There’s something very Giroscope about bringing all of this together in a building that itself has been brought back to life, with Hull people and Hull organisations helping make the night happen.

We started 40 years ago with a few people, some empty houses and the idea that things could be done differently.
We think that deserves a proper party.

Heritage. Community. Enterprise.

It was wonderful to welcome visitors to St Matthew’s over the weekend for Heritage Open Days. People of all ages joined us from the local community, alongside visitors with a particular interest in the building's history and heritage.

The big highlights were tours of the tower featuring an audio installation of the old church bell, displays of the renovation work, and Alec Gill street photography of working lives in the west Hull community, from scrap metal to fishing and work in the home.

It was a great opportunity to share more about St Matthew’s, its story, and its place within the local area, and to see so much interest, curiosity and conversation through the day.

We had great feedback and interest in the building's exciting future as a centre for community and enterprise. A big thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the event such an enjoyable occasion.

At our 'From Homes to Communities' event in Westminster, we set out a simple argument: community organisations across the country have the experience, local knowledge and commitment to tackle difficult housing and neighbourhood challenges.

What they too often lack is access to the long-term, reliable capital that allows them to work at scale.

What's next for neighbourhood renewal?

Join us for Giroscope 40: Our Origin Story – Part 3 on Friday 18 September, 12–1.30pm, at St Matthew's Community Enterprise Centre, Hull.

For the final part of our Our Origin Story trilogy, we'll look at where Giroscope's 40 years of neighbourhood action could lead next.

At the heart of the discussion is Our Hand Made Neighbourhood, Giroscope's developing approach to bringing housing, nature, learning and enterprise together, building on four decades of repairing homes, creating opportunities and working street by street in West Hull.

We'll explore how small, practical acts of repair can add up to wider neighbourhood change; how overlooked sites can become homes, green spaces and places for enterprise; and how local people can play an active role in designing, learning and shaping what happens next.

Our speakers:

Andrew O'Brien is Head of Secretariat at the Independent Commission on Neighbourhoods (ICON), with a focus on neighbourhood policy, social capital and public service reform. He was previously Director of Policy and Impact at Demos, with earlier roles at Social Enterprise UK and Charity Finance Group.

Richard Motley is a place-based economic development and urban regeneration specialist with considerable experience in development, housing, social enterprise and place-making. He helps deliver community-focused projects to improve social business confidence in communities to address their needs and aspirations.

Dr. Aviv Kruglanski is a researcher and artist with expertise in community economies on a neighbourhood scale. Widely exhibited internationally as an artist, he is core-group member of the Community Economies Institute, co-founder of 3 Stages of Succession ( www.3stagesofs.org) and former Giroscope trustee.

There'll be plenty of time for discussion and Q&A, followed by a free vegetarian lunch and a chance to connect.

****Where do we find a sense of home?****
We asked three members of the Alec Gill Photography Competition jury to share a photograph that, for them, connects with the idea of home. Here are three very different photographs — and the thoughts behind them.

'Most Sunday afternoons we used to load up a horse and cart with drinks and food go down to The Traveller Camp which was roughly where Red Sails is now (before Clive Sullivan way was built) and have a barbecue. I used to take my camera and photograph all the old photographs for them as they value them greatly. Never had any trouble. Great people and times."

“I took this when I was on holiday in Granada, in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. In the photo are some Flamenco dancers in front of the Alhambra Moorish Palace. I love the way the Flamenco dancers are so proud and have created their culture in the area around their former home.”

“I suppose it’s about innocence and playfulness. It could be perceived as home. Hull is my home.”
