An incredible piece of Orkney history

The jawbones of two fin whales that died naturally on the shores of Burray now form this striking monument at one of Orkney’s popular beaches. A beautiful and unusual reminder of the incredible marine life surrounding our islands 💙

The Mill O Cara

A little bit of Orkney history, lovingly brought back to life.

Right on the shore, with beautiful sea views, The Mill O’ Cara is a unique little island retreat full of history and character. With its quirky interiors and wonderfully traditional feel, it’s a special place to slow down, switch off and enjoy Orkney by the sea.

Once a working mill, it served the residents of Burray and the Grimness end of South Ronaldsay. It ceased production at the end of the Second World War, and lay derelict for years, waiting for the next chapter of its story to begin.

That new chapter began when it was bought and renovated by a local family, restoring it into this unique holiday home, providing guests with a special taste of Orkney.

Fishing News went to sea! We joined Sean Dennison and his son Drew as they headed out of Kirkwall before dawn for a long day targeting brown crab and lobster around the waters of Orkney.

From the harbour wall in Kirkwall to the waters off Sanday, it was a fascinating insight into the skill, knowledge and adaptability that underpin Orkney's shellfish fleet.
