๐ŸŒณ Peover Hall NGS Open Gardens this weekend ๐ŸชปSaturday and Sunday 12PM-5PM.

Join us to celebrate 50 years of the National Garden Scheme at Peover Hall.

Open Saturday and Sunday from 12PM-5PM guests can enjoy:

A visit to Peover Hall gardens which were designed between 1890-1900 and feature a series of โ€˜garden roomsโ€™ filled with clipped box, water garden, Romanesque loggia, warm brick walls, unusual doors, secret passageways, beautiful topiary work and walled gardens, C19 dell and rockery, rhododendrons and pleached limes.

The grounds of the Hall also house working stables, estate cottages and the parish church of St Lawrence which contains two Mainwaring Chapels with beautiful effigies.

The house will be open to the public during the NGS open weekend but will incur an extra charge for a tour. The architectural jewel is the Grade I listed Carolean stables built in 1654; their interior stalls are richly carved and include original Tuscan columns and strap work. The Carolean stables will be open to view during the weekend.

Cream teas will be served in the Park House Tea Room.

๐ŸŒฟ Itโ€™s The Tree Council's National Hedgerow Week 2026 ๐ŸŒฟ

Weโ€™re looking back to April when we ventured out to Ashley Cricket Club to meet Ed Brown from Tatton Estate and Richard Thorogood from Cheshire hedges to talk about the importance of hedge laying and why restoring our hedgerows matters for the future of the countryside. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿฆ

Without intervention, this hedge would likely have become increasingly gappy and eventually disappeared over the next 10 years. Instead, through traditional Cheshire-style hedge laying, it has now been rejuvenated to support wildlife, farming and the wider landscape for decades to come. ๐ŸŒฑ

A properly laid hedge becomes:
๐Ÿ‘ Stock proof
โณ Long lasting
๐ŸŒฟ Dense at ground level
๐Ÿฆ” Rich in wildlife habitat
๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ More resilient to weather and disease

That density at the bottom is the key difference. Over time, unmanaged or mechanically flailed hedges can become hollow underneath, reducing both their agricultural value and their ability to protect wildlife. As Richard explains in the film, thick, low growth provides vital shelter for nesting birds and small mammals. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿชบ

Healthy hedgerows also act as:
๐Ÿฆ‹ Wildlife corridors
๐Ÿชบ Nesting habitats
๐Ÿ Pollinator resources
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Windbreaks
๐ŸŒ Carbon stores
๐Ÿ’ง Natural flood management features
๐ŸŒฑ Soil protection tools

For estates and farmers, hedgerows are increasingly being recognised as essential infrastructure rather than decoration. They help improve biodiversity, reduce soil erosion, support water retention and strengthen the resilience of the wider landscape. ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒณ

This is what habitat volunteering days look like on the Tatton Estate ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›๐ŸŒณ

Friday 24 April was a scorcher for our monthly habitat management session, delivered in partnership with Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Friends of the Heath. Despite the heat, 15 volunteers, both regulars and newcomers, did a fantastic job.

We were especially pleased to welcome a corporate volunteer from Manchester events company, Manchester Central, who joined us for the day. It is always great to see local organisations getting involved in caring for local green spaces

Tom from Cheshire Wildlife Trust guided the group through two key tasks in the sandpit, the heart of the reserve where gorse and heather grow side by side.

Our habitat days offer a simple but powerful way for colleagues to connect with nature and with each other.

These sessions fill up quickly, so if you would like to join the next event on Friday 29 May, please book your place using the link below.

Other future sessions are held on the last Friday of every month.
