🚨 ISLE OF SKYE TOURIST BOARD – URGENT INCIDENT BULLETIN
MAJOR ALCOHOL SPILL ON A87 – PUBLIC URGED TO REMAIN CALM
The Isle of Skye Tourist Board has received reports of a serious incident on the A87 at Drumuie, just north of Portree, where a delivery lorry carrying a substantial quantity of wh**ky, b**r and assorted spirits has overturned, spilling much of its load across the carriageway.
Emergency services are understood to be assessing the situation.
The driver is reportedly uninjured.
The same cannot be said for several hundred bottles of single malt.
• UNUSUAL PUBLIC RESPONSE
Within minutes of the incident, a considerable number of local residents reportedly arrived at the scene.
Several were carrying buckets.
Others had brought wheelbarrows, hip flasks and, in one case, a small trailer.
Police are advising motorists not to stop.
This advice has so far been received with very limited enthusiasm.
• LOCAL REACTION
Donnie MacLeod, who happened to be passing with an empty livestock trailer, described the incident as:
“Just a terrible waste.”
He then asked whether anyone had established which side of the road the Talisker was on.
Murdo, 79, was less concerned about the traffic disruption.
“If it’s the cheap stuff, I’d leave it.”
He has since returned with a torch.
• EMERGENCY RESPONSE
The Tourist Board understands that a number of local volunteers have offered to assist with the clean-up.
Highland Council has welcomed the community spirit but reminded residents that removing alcohol from the scene without authorisation may constitute theft.
One resident reportedly replied:
“Even if it’s already opened?”
Legal clarification is currently being sought.
• ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
SEPA may be asked to assess the potential impact of wh**ky entering nearby burns, and the nearby Snizort River.
The Tourist Board is particularly concerned about the possibility of intoxicated salmon attempting to return to rivers they were never born in.
Local anglers have been asked to report any fish swimming sideways.
• TRAFFIC UPDATE
The A87 remains subject to significant disruption.
Motorists are advised to allow additional journey time and avoid stopping to examine the contents of roadside boxes.
A temporary diversion may be introduced.
Donnie has suggested using the old road.
Murdo says there isn’t one.
• WEATHER WARNING
Conditions at Drumuie are expected to deteriorate, with heavy rain forecast.
Emergency services are therefore working against the clock to prevent further damage to the remaining stock.
The Tourist Board understands that several local residents have expressed particular concern about the wh**ky becoming diluted.
One was heard to remark:
“For God’s sake, somebody get a tarpaulin over it.”
FURTHER UPDATES TO FOLLOW.
ISLE OF SKYE TOURIST BOARD
We ask the public to remain calm and allow the authorities to carry out their work.
There is no need to panic....Unless of course it’s the 18-year-old.
