Did you watch the latest season of Clarkson's farm where he sent a drone up looking for skylark nests? Here's what he was looking for. I saw these chicks on the path just up from the house today.

In the UK they are on the red list as a conservation concern and I can see why! The nest is in the centre of a path under a tree so not the most protected! They are lovely though 😍

When it feels like 38 degrees and your on a mountain in Wales something has gone wrong somewhere. Our biggest challenge today has been keeping the chickens cool. Because we aren't all friends yet, we have the pekins next to the toilet, Green and Purple next to the (unlit) fire and Tiny next to the shoe rack 😂🤣

I'm not gonna lie, Green is pretty pi**ed at me, but this is necessary in order to keep them alive.

How are you coping?

Purple update. She's had a course of antibiotics and while she is doing better, I know that she can't recover from this....

Purple update.

She's had a course of antibiotics and while she is doing better, I know that she can't recover from this. So I'm making sure that everyday she's with us she feels the wind in her feathers, the grass under her feet and gets to eat her favourite snacks. That's a life she wasn't promised, but is definitely what she deserves. 💜

We've been a bit quiet the last few weeks as we've had a lot going on, including two poorly hens. No one can tell me what's wrong with Purple so we're keeping a close eye on her.

Unfortunately we lost Yellow on Tuesday due to water belly. If you've had chickens before you'll know that water belly is incurable. While rescuing ex battery hens has been really rewarding, no one really talks about how hard it can be. You collect scruffy poorly looking birds who begin to flourish. However, they often come with underlying conditions due to how poorly they are bred. You throw everything at them to improve their lives and their health but it's still not enough. It's heartbreaking.

Tiny's new friends!

Went to Brecon at the weekend to pick up two Pekin chickens. I picked this specific breed for a variety of reasons, but mainly because they're docile and hopefully shouldn't pick on Tiny because she's different.

I also picked Pekins as I understood they don't fly. Check out the video to see how that's going. 🤦🏼‍♀️

They need to be isolated for a couple of weeks before they can be introduced to Tiny. I'm already traumatised. These little ladies are so full of mischief it's definitely keeping me on my toes.

We don't have names for them yet so put some suggestions in the comments and we'll pick the best ones!

Here's our first problem.

The gable end is partly lower than the ground level. There's probably around 3-4 feet that's underground.

At some point, the internal walls were covered in a cement render. It used to be used as part of the dairy so it makes sense. The previous owner painted the render with emulsion paint.

Herein lies the perfect storm - lower than ground level, cement and plastic paint. Where does the moisture go? Its trapped, so over time the render fails and the moisture is held in the stone and eats away at the pointing, turning it to nothing more than grit and dirt.

It's important that the render in this area is removed soon so that we can let the air get at the stone so it can dry out.

How long is it going to take to dry out? That's the million pound question.

Weekly recap!

Here's what we did this week:

Cutting up some of the wood piled where the extension is going - wood was cut, split and stacked in the wood store.

We managed to take apart the table tennis table the last owner 'gifted' us so we could get it out the barn. That thing is bigger than we are!

We're going through the painful process of removing the cement render inside and exposing the lovely stone. This is going to take forever.

There's always something to do. I'll never be bored again 😂

Current progress - the outside edition!

When we first bought the property, the buildings were surrounded by trees - a mix of beech and sycamore. This used to be a working farm and I think the trees were part of hedging which had essentially been left to go rogue for the last 100+ years.

While they were pretty, the buildings were in complete darkness. Several of the trees were rotting from the inside, and they were too close to the buildings. We had to take them down for safety reasons.

What this means is that we're still dealing with the clean up as the trees were pretty big.

I've got some firewood for sale if anyone is looking!
