Busy time of year here. The grass keeps growing, branches need cutting, and the weeds seem determined to win. In amongst it all, we’re trying to nurture the orchard and enjoy the small rewards it brings.

This year feels a little special. Some of our trees are fruiting for the first time ever, including pears and plums. Ripening in the orchard are pears, plums, apples, redcurrants, blackcurrants and strawberries. Over the last few days we’ve also picked raspberries, blueberries, spinach and mustard greens.

It’s hard work. There are days when it feels endless. Then you have moments like this and remember why you do it. Seeing fruit on trees you’ve cared for, picking food you’ve grown yourself, and watching the seasons slowly unfold is incredibly rewarding.

Today’s unexpected visitor was a baby tawny owl, sitting out in broad daylight after being startled by the ride-on mower. A reminder that we’re only sharing this little patch of land with its true residents. Check out the story for footage of our young owl visitor.

Some days the jobs list is long. Other days nature gives you a gentle reminder that all the hard work is worth it. 🌿🦉🍐🫐🍓

Lovely guests John and Olga visiting from Netherlands giving us 5 stars and wishing they had stayed for longer. Putting Google translate to work and saying great things “ Brilliant stay, very spacious and very cozy. Exceptionally friendly host. We would have loved to stay longer.”

Lovely 5 💫 review from Anne who stayed with her gorgeous red setter over the weekend before she travelled onwards home. We pride ourselves on providing a relaxing, welcoming place for both humans and dogs alike. With an old building comes its issues but we have tried to ensure we have adapted where we can. Welcoming our next guests on Friday hope the weather plays nicely for them for some of their stay 🌂 💭

One of the lovely things about staying at the Annexe is that you can step straight from “switch off mode” into proper countryside exploring.

A favourite local walk of ours is up Bizzyberry Hill. Not a huge mountain by any means, but the views make you feel miles away from everything. Rolling hills, quiet paths, fresh air and that sort of peaceful silence you forget you’ve missed.

There’s also a bit of local history tucked into the walk too, with the hill believed to have ancient origins dating back thousands of years. It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down a bit.

Perfect for:
• a morning stroll before breakfast
• walking off a lovely dinner
• dog adventures
• photography lovers
• or simply clearing your head for an hour
Sometimes the best days away aren’t about doing anything complicated. Just comfy shoes, good company and a view worth stopping for. 🌿

The orchard is putting on its annual show at it never gets old.

Apple blossom everywhere, the red and blackcurrants beginning to burst into life, and our newest additions, the cob nut trees, all starting to find their place amongst the older planting. For many of these trees and bushes this is now their 7th year in the ground. Hard to believe really.

Every spring we stand back slightly amazed at the transformation. Some trees we genuinely thought we had lost over the years have suddenly rallied round and come back stronger than ever, covered in blossom as if to prove a point. Nature has a funny way of reminding us that growth and recovery take time.
