We received an email yesterday from a potential customer:
“We’ve had four other quotes come in between £60,000 and £70,000. If you can match that, we’re happy to move forward.”
The project?
A 6x4m extension with:
– large Structural steels
– Aluminium sliding doors
– Underfloor heating
– A large rooflight
– And the high-end finish you’d expect on paper.
But here’s the truth:
We’ve costed this type of project many times. We track every job we do — not just estimates, but real labour, materials, and profit margins. And the only way we could deliver this for £60–70k would be to lose money.
So why are builders pricing like this?
1️⃣ Because they estimate based on “rough ballparks,” not detailed breakdowns.
2️⃣ Because they feel they have to undercut to win work.
3️⃣ Because they don’t track costs — so they don’t even know when they’re losing money… until it’s too late.
And then what happens?
They start robbing Peter to pay Paul. Jobs overlap. Sites are left half-done. Delays mount. Customers are left wondering what went wrong.
Last winter, we took on four rescue jobs where the original builder just walked off site — no windows, no explanation. I still can’t believe this is happening in 2025!
We price honestly and build with integrity. If that means we don’t win every job, so be it. We’re not in a race to the bottom — we’re here to do it properly, for customers who value quality, service, and peace of mind.
