Bricklaying is now well underway on this substantial rear extension in Harrogate - and this is the stage where the transformation really starts to come to life.

With the footprint taking shape, you can already see how dramatically this space is going to open up the home, creating a huge, light-filled living area designed around the client’s incredible vision for the finished result.

This is going to be a stunning transformation and we honestly can’t wait to see it progress over the coming weeks. Plenty more updates to come as this exciting build continues.

Decision overload is real in construction and it hits hardest when you are not prepared for it.

One of the biggest things we see is people wanting to get on site and start digging before the planning is properly in place. It feels exciting, it feels like progress, but skipping that stage costs you so much more in the long run.

Get your planning right first. Work with the right architect. We work closely with RIBA architects who really know their stuff and the difference it makes to a project from day one is huge.

Fail to plan, plan to fail.

Me and Jono have been at the Blueprint Retreat this week and honestly it has been a really valuable couple of days so far…

Me and Jono came into this wanting clarity and that is exactly what we are getting. Clarity on systems, on how to manage and lead a team properly, and on where we should actually be spending our time as business owners.

Some of my key takeaways so far:

Track your time. You cannot manage what you do not measure.
We should be spending 70% of our time developing our business, not just in it.
Educate your teams. A well informed team is a well performing team.
Lead by example, always.

The quote that has stuck with me the most so far:

“Execution is key.”

You can have the best strategy in the world but if you are not executing it, it means nothing.

Only on day two so plenty more to come. Watch this space.

A current project of ours in Leeds and honestly, this one is a joy to be part of.

We are turning a three bedroom bungalow into a four bedroom two-storey family home and even at this stage, you can already feel the scale of what it is going to become.

Every part of the house has been thought through properly. Nothing wasted, nothing overlooked.

What makes it even better is the client. They have put so much thought into the material choices and honestly it shows. This house is going to feel like it has always been there, not like a renovation at all.

First walkthrough of where we are now, and more to come as the build progresses.

The cheapest builder isn’t the cheapest builder.

They win the job on price, then make it back on extras. You end up paying more anyway, just with more stress and less clarity along the way.
Go with someone reputable. Someone who covers everything upfront, answers your questions before you sign, and puts it all in writing.
Speaking of which, ask as many questions as you want before contracts are signed. A good builder won’t mind. A bad one will.

Know what you’re getting. Know what you’re not getting. That second part matters just as much.

We received an email yesterday from a potential customer:

“We’ve had four other quotes come in between £60,000 and £70,000. If you can match that, we’re happy to move forward.”

The project?
A 6x4m extension with:
– large Structural steels
– Aluminium sliding doors
– Underfloor heating
– A large rooflight
– And the high-end finish you’d expect on paper.

But here’s the truth:
We’ve costed this type of project many times. We track every job we do — not just estimates, but real labour, materials, and profit margins. And the only way we could deliver this for £60–70k would be to lose money.

So why are builders pricing like this?

1️⃣ Because they estimate based on “rough ballparks,” not detailed breakdowns.
2️⃣ Because they feel they have to undercut to win work.
3️⃣ Because they don’t track costs — so they don’t even know when they’re losing money… until it’s too late.

And then what happens?

They start robbing Peter to pay Paul. Jobs overlap. Sites are left half-done. Delays mount. Customers are left wondering what went wrong.
Last winter, we took on four rescue jobs where the original builder just walked off site — no windows, no explanation. I still can’t believe this is happening in 2025!

We price honestly and build with integrity. If that means we don’t win every job, so be it. We’re not in a race to the bottom — we’re here to do it properly, for customers who value quality, service, and peace of mind.
